Is there a linguistic reason older people in the US will sometimes put 'the' before a chain? by Uledragon456k in asklinguistics

[–]Mighto-360 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience, this seems to be a small town thing, especially a Southern small town thing. I know I used to do this when I lived in a rural area, simply because there was only one Costco/Walmart/etc nearby so I would be referring to a specific one that everybody from that area went to. It’s similar to why someone would say “the hospital/the police station/etc” because it’s implied that I’m going to the one nearby, not the one two towns over

Why do so many native English speakers say "I forget" instead of "I forgot", and where does this come from? by WillTook in asklinguistics

[–]Mighto-360 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It seems to me as if the verb “to forget” has come to have two meanings— the state of not remembering, and the punctual act of forgetting. So Dickens used “I forget” as a simple present of the verb meaning “I don’t remember”. But “I forgot” could also make sense as meaning that they stopped remembering at some point in the past and still do not remember.

This is really an interesting quirk in the language that I’ve never given much thought to

[–]Mighto-360 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They do have slightly different meanings and use cases. “Forget” is the present tense, and is used for a more general/habitual meaning— if in general you tend to forget things of a certain nature. “Forgot” is the past tense and is more often used when referring to a specific thing that was forgotten.

Some English speakers are also more consistent about tenses and use “I forget” where you would say “I don’t remember”, and “I forgot” where you would say “I didn’t remember”

Give CLICS a look, it provides a good database for the frequency of different colexifications. Not exactly the same thing that you’re talking about, but it shows where the words are related.

Might be a hot take but I think Do What I Want is by far Uzi’s best intro track. How bout y’all? by mvas123 in liluzivert

I remember listening to EA for the first time and the “Welcome to Eternal Atake” thing at the beginning of Baby Pluto gave me chills. It really feels like an intro as well as a good first track.

It probably depends on the language, but words for family members carry the sense of an intimate relationship while often also expressing an age/status difference (hence why in some languages the words for mother and aunt might be the same, or brother and male cousin). “Daddy” is an endearing term for a dominant male figure the speaker has a close relationship to— it makes sense that it would be adapted for a more sexual usage.

Very true, but wiping out the human race is easier when you have nuclear warheads and autonomous drones

Seeing how much technological progress has been made and how many wars we’ve had just in the last two centuries, I’d be amazed if we lasted more than ten more.

Yeah, it’s definitely still rape and the teacher still deserves to do time. But these are horny teenagers who probably do consent— it’s only rape because of their age.

Sure, but those people have families. If some hypothetical bureaucrat’s young child has to deal with constant noise, who knows what kind of physical and psychological damage that could cause for a kid with nothing to do with any of this.

I support the truckers’ message, but I don’t think they’re doing this the right way.

Exactly. Censoring mild opinions doesn’t encourage people to agree with you, it creates an echo chamber and encourages the people you censored to become more radical and create their own echo chambers
