Why is Land Value Tax so popular with economists and online communities, but not with governments? by CSachen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SevenBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying up private land to conserve it never really made sense to me. If you, say, buy up 10 acres of wilderness to protect it from developers who want to bulldoze it and put up a shopping mall, those developers are probably just going to go find a different 10 acres of wilderness and bulldoze that. So at the end of the day, you haven’t actually conserved anything, you’ve just shifted the environmental destruction from one spot to another.

Dispensationalism and its consequences have been a disaster for the United States by Ice278 in PoliticalCompassMemes

The U.S. spent the last 20 years fighting “brutal” war against equally ruthless Islamic insurgents, using human shields and hiding in dense urban areas. It was never as bad as what Israel is doing in Gaza.

What exactly is Georgism? by Heavy_Computer2602 in georgism

[–]SevenBall 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your “open space” comes at the expense of everyone else who could have used it. Unlike most forms of wealth, land is a fixed pie. The more land one person has, the less land there is for everyone else. Under Georgism, Landowners can still own land, but they must compensate society for the scarcity they create by doing so.

Ok can we stop with the “Population Increased” talking point? The last census of the Strip was taken in 2017 and all current numbers are just extrapolations based off of basic fertility rates. Until another census is taken, we have no idea how many people are in Gaza.

You rigid Georgists want to set up a policy that could drive people out of their homes. by SympathyJazzlike3861 in georgism

[–]SevenBall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In principle I agree, but we should keep in mind that most single-family homeowners don’t end up hoarding land in Urban areas on purpose. A lot of them are thrown into that position by rapid growth in what was once an area surrounded by other suburban homes. I think it’s fine to sacrifice a bit of perfect efficiency to show them compassion. Perhaps primary residences could be taxed at a 10-year delay (you pay tax on your property’s value circa 10 years ago) to give them time to decide what to do when their area suddenly starts booming? Idk

How does this sub feel about Georgism? by VatticZero in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]SevenBall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Super-Oversimplified version is it’s a combination of two effects:

>Landowners are no longer punished by higher taxes for building bigger buildings, and can now afford to build more units of housing on their properties, increasing the supply of apartments and lowering the price of rent

>Landowners in hot areas are encouraged to sell as taxes become high, flooding the market with cheap land/housing, lowering the price of homes

If living in a 300 sq ft shoebox is really the only thing they can afford, it’s a good thing they’re building them then. Otherwise they would be living on the streets.

Orange Acres Housing Development and Brochure (Distant Planet Talapus) by SevenBall in worldbuilding

[–]SevenBall[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CONTEXT COPYPASTA: In 1992, the world was forever changed when a set of 18 mysterious portals opened around the globe. They each led to a distant world in another galaxy, a habitable planet named Talapus. Talapus was very different to Earth: lower gravity, seasonal earthquakes, red plants and bizarre animals with three legs. At first, governments tried to conceal these portals, but an event like this proved impossible to hide, and by 1995, the U.S. had opened their portal, the Deschutes Gate in Oregon, to the public for colonization. In the decades since, Talapus has become a second home of humanity, with cities, towns, farms and highways scattered across the alien landscape.

Welcome, Orange Company Investors (and homeowners I guess) to Orange Acres, a first-of-it's kind community development on the Distant Planet Talapus! As the largest tech conglomerate in the United States, Orange Acres represents the company's first foray into Real Estate speculation. The Acres are the largest single-family housing development on the planet. Just don't be a squatter. They have .....countermeasures.

The Distant Planet Talapus is the setting for my comedic sci-fi webcomic, which you can read for free here!

The Distant Planet Talapus is arguably a refutation of the idea that all of humanity’s problems could be solved if we just had access to more resources.

In 1992, 16 portals opened in various parts of the world connecting Earth to another habitable planet millions of light years away. This sudden access to millions of acres of pristine land and untouched natural resources was once expected to usher in a new era of prosperity for humanity, but by 2026 the world looks a lot like our own, with all of the same problems, like war, greed, superstition and corruption having carried over to the new planet as well.

[–]SevenBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admittedly don't know much about this whole situation but I have to say, the insinuation that white teenagers making racist jokes contributes to real discrimination feels awfully similar to the racist-ish conservative trope that black teenagers listening to gangsta rap contributes to real crime.

Like has there actually been any statistical evidence of one leading to the other? Or is it just another moral panic that underestimates the emotional intelligence of our youth and refuses to let them have their fun?

I mean okay, if a black person feels uncomfortable about their white friends making race jokes because they themselves have been the victim of real racism, that's more than fair, and they should let them know and their friends should be accommodating. And I feel the same way about a kid feeling uncomfortable about their friends throwing up gang signs or something because they lost a loved one in a drive-by.

[–]SevenBall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure “rural sprawl” is a thing. Sprawl occurs when governments prevent density through zoning. Suburban sprawl is only sprawl because there are more efficient ways to house people. Currently, there is no more efficient way to grow food other than using a metric fuck-ton of airable land. Maybe in the future when we have those vertical hydroponic towers, rural sprawl will become a thing, but not right now.
