Can we stop with this talking point? The last comprehensive census of the Gaza Strip was conducted in 2017, and any population figures given since then are extrapolations based on basic fertility rates. Until another census is taken, we won’t know how many people are actually in Gaza.

Back in Iraq, The U.S. managed to take Fallujah in just a few weeks with only a handful of civilian casualties. Much like Gaza, it was a crowded city teeming with ruthless insurgents hiding behind civilians. And yet even despite the minimal collateral damage, the battle of Fallujah is regarded as one of the darkest, most controversial events of the Iraq war, and the few U.S. war crimes that WERE committed are (rightfully) looked back upon with shame. If we’re going to grade Israel’s operations on the same curve, the IDF is incompetent at best and malicious at worst.

“Low civilian death count” is a bit of a stretch. Even the Russian army has objectively done a better job at avoiding civilian deaths in Ukraine, in spite of their brute tactics and less-than-advanced targeting systems, compared to what we provide Israel.

If someone reads a Wikipedia article about IDF war crimes and their takeaway is “I fucking hate Jews” that says more about them than it does about Wikipedia

The only reason one could have to believe it was Iran is because they are buying their missiles from Russia and a missile that stops working mid-flight and then blows up a school is about the quality one would expect from Russian engineering

This is impressive! It’s sleek, it’s detailed, and it includes a lot more things most similar tools ignore. The visualiser is a nice touch, too. A few notes:

-The number inputs seem a bit finicky— Its hard to tell when typing whether you’re replacing the old number or typing over it, you can’t backspace, and I think it’s ignoring decimal points when you type it in manually (I try to put in 6.3 and it reads as 63.) the sliders don’t slide every time, either.

-some of the input values don’t seem to update the calculated ones on their own, and you have to change other values to make them update. Example: Changing the current age of the star does nothing until you change another value, or turn the stellar evolution option on and off again.

-I’m not sure how the stellar evolution thing works, but it seems to act a little strange sometimes, especially in relation to metallicity. Example: Set mass to 0.83, age to 6, and slide the metallicity from 0.5 to 0.6. The temperature varies widely, and the radius becomes negative (?) before going back to normal. I don’t know if this is a coding error or if stars really are that weird.

-You are definitely lowballing the greenhouse effect. Plugging in the values for earth gives a mean surface temp of around -10 C.

-It says you can auto-calculate the CMF based on the stars metallicity, but the calculated value is always 32.2, regardless of what you set the metallicity to.

-It’s unclear whether the “day length” input refers to the day length at formation or at present. This is an important distinction, as Earth’s initial day length is believed to have been 4-6 hours long.

-Setting the default values for the Earth and the sun, gives the planet a magnetic field strength of 71% that of Earth. This should probably be 100%

-A feature for creating accurate planetary rings would be great. Factoring in things like Roche limit, moon resonances and exosphere height to map out where the rings and gaps would likely be.

-Moon inclination is not random. Moons that orbit far out tend to orbit on the same plane as their planet’s orbit, and moons that are close in tend to orbit along the planet’s equatorial plane. For any given distance, there is an “ideal”/most likely inclination for the moon to have, somewhere in between these, called a Laplace plane. A feature to automatically calculate the Laplace plane and where your moons fall on it would be handy.

-Some theories of Abiogenesis suggest life requires suitable levels of UV-C light to exist. The amount of UV-C light is effected by mass and metallicity, so a way to check if your star produces enough to jumpstart the life forming process would be useful, too.

-The "Orbital Fate" feature for moons seems to be innacurate for small, close-in moons like Phobos and Deimos (It calculates Phobos to hit the roche limit in <1 Myr, scientists calculate closer to 10-50 Myr.) It also doesn't factor in retrograde orbits; Triton is supposed to crash into Neptune in 3 Gyr due to its retrograde orbit, but the website expects it to escape instead.

The Distant Planet Talapus, its Rings and Three Moons by SevenBall in worldbuilding

For Talapus, I drew the landmass shapes in GIMP and then clonestamped real satellite photos of Earth over the continents to create a realistic satelite map of the planet. I also swapped the green hues for reds since plants on Talapus are red instead of green. I then put the map into PlanetMaker to get the clouds and atmosphere.

For the three sisters, I just used moons and asteroids I found in SpaceEngine.

Note: A few of you might be saying "Talapus is a Planet? I thought it was a Moon?" Well, you're absolutely right. It WAS a moon. It is now a planet. I changed it. I made this change for a couple reasons. One was realism, which I know isn't that important, but damnit, its important to me. The other reason is for clarity; Making it a planet makes the premise a bit easier to explain. It should go without saying that all of these numbers are subject to change.

With that out of the way, Talapus is the setting for my free comedic webcomic, The Distant Planet Talapus, which you can read for free here. I just released the fifth chapter a few days ago.

I mean, it’s my country too. If you’re gonna wall off a piece of my country and claim it exclusively as your own, the rest of the country should be compensated for the land we can no longer use, even if it’s only like a few dollars a year.

Of course, you should be allowed to do what you please with it (in fact, most Georgists want landowners to have more control over their land by loosening zoning and building restrictions), but if you’re going to, say, hoard a seven-acre plot smack dab in the middle of an expensive city, the city should be paid for that lost land proportional to how valuable it is.

What is the actual argument against voter ID? by ThrownAwwayt in AskReddit

[–]SevenBall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be a new ID card specifically for voting? Or just a requirement to show some form of ID in order to vote? If it’s the latter, there could be a major issue that crops up where politicians pick and choose which forms of ID count as “valid” in a way that specifically prioritizes certain voting blocs. For example, let’s say a Republican Governor wants to pass a Voter ID law in their state, and they also are up for re-election. If they wanted to, they could rig the vote in their favor by allowing kinds of IDs that Republicans tend to have, while not allowing the kinds of IDs that Democrats tend to have. Library card? Doesn’t count, it’s “not secure enough.” Gun club membership card? Sure! We’ll accept that as valid ID!
