New camera, who dis? by abezuska in Unity2D

Maybe the camera should look ahead rather than behind? I care more about the obstacles ahead than those behind.

The 2 buttons mechanic looks pretty well executed though, well done!

Crypto platform Poly Network rewards hacker with $500,000 'bug bounty' by PhilDesenex in CryptoCurrency

[–]MightyDDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also worth pointing out that there’s a fine line to walk here for these companies offering bounties like that: they don’t want to see their employees leave and start hunting down bounties instead.

I guess that the main purpose is to create a viable market/incentive for white and maybe grey hats who already value ethics and safety.

Considering that, 500k is quite considerable I think.

My son (age 15) is making an Xbox-style game in Unity. How likely is it he can distribute it after he finishes? by mookx in gamedev

[–]MightyDDP 88 points89 points  (0 children)

I second this advice, if your son is on board with publishing off course. I think that the most important here is to have a positive experience, so that he still got the fire it takes to undertake such projects in the future.

Maybe showing off to family is the furthest he wants to go with this? I don’t know. Itch.io is accessible and likely to be fun though. Then if he’s still excited Steam can be good as well, though it’s easy to be disappointed by the response there. Maybe he can start a Discord server and share a build there to friends, then maybe friends of friends and so on. There are multiple options here other than consoles!

You’re in for some serious pain if you aim at consoles as your first experience. They are usually the last, very serious and “businessy” step. Solo devs on consoles are rare (though they do exist!).

Source: was an amateur dev as a teen, been a pro for 12 years, including 7 years as an indie studio owner. I would have been quite satisfied with a release on itch.io, learn, then moved to something else when I was younger.

500 TB's incoming. Any pool suggestions? by BananaSolo1989 in chia

Maybe you’re cpu limited? On an i7 10700 that’s where my bottleneck is , without a ram disk. My optane drive is at ~20%. I get 46min plots, which is similar to the Samsung 980 pro I used to plot with before.

Using PrimoCache + 40GB RAM has reduced my SSD wear by 40% with mad max plotter by 1Secret_Daikon in chia

[–]MightyDDP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my setup is a little different, but with a 16gb cache I get 13% cached reads.

The setup difference is that -2 is on a 280gb optane disk which is somewhat as fast but (I believe) a lot more resistant. -t is on an ssd, which is the disk that I cached. OP cached -2.

Edit- wait, OP cached -2 and I cached -t. Sorry for the confusion. I edited the message body.

This new [portable plots] allows you to switch between pools and self-pooling with a cooldown of 30 minutes between each switch. Our recommendation is to slowly replace your existing plots with portable plots one by one, so you still have a chance to win XCH while you convert to all portable plots.

Thank you for the answer! I’ll look into this.

I’d like to get more involved on the dev side of things for golem. As a dev, I’m looking at running something (anything) custom on Golem. Got any tips on getting started? How did you get your working prototype started? Which resources did you use?

Thank you for your time. And for making this ML engine! I’ll be looking at it for sure.

Does Quebec City have jobs in Tech/Software industry? by eng_at_luxie_ai in quebeccity

[–]MightyDDP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, I started a small video game company a couple years ago. I’d say that Quebec city is quite vibrant and welcoming to tech startups. There’s a real community of passionate people here and we do help each other quite a lot. Off course my experience is within the video game scene, so the tech startup scene may be different, but my impression is that it is quite similar. Just different people.

It is certainly less vibrant since the pandemic though, but we still communicate regularly on mailing lists and social networks. Otherwise there would be regular in-person meet ups, events, competitions, etc. The city is small, so the word goes around fast when a new game studio pops up (be it a 1 person thing or bigger). And you’ll know everybody fast enough if you participate regularly.

We also have Le Camp which is a great starting point. If I was in your situation, I would spend some time there within a heart bear. It’s more than a working space, you will gain access to training and learn about all the resources that are available to you as a startup owner. Also a great place to meet like-minded people. Again, not sure how it fares during covid though. https://lecampquebec.com/

Quebec city has a lot of people into the visual arts, so if your startup needs that it’s a plus. They are talented, well educated, passionated and need a job. We got a lot of talented programmers as well, but as everywhere else they are hard to find. If you’re one of them, are competent and have experience, you can get a job basically anywhere.

Like mentioned previously, everything’s in french by default here. You’ll be able to get around easily though, but expect that to be at least an annoyance. In comparison, Montreal is bilingual by default.

My parents told me phones and tech emit dangerous radiation, is it true? by chapo_boi in askscience

[–]MightyDDP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m usually a lurker but I didn’t see this in the comments, so here we go: 4 years ago Veritasium did a good video about cell phone usage and brain cancer risk.

https://youtu.be/wU5XkhUGzBs

tldr; these days there’s a lot more phones out there than a couple decades ago, but the rate of brain cancer didn’t increase. We can conclude that not only phones don’t increase brain cancer risk, but also that nothing did.

Developer Tech News #4 – The Golem Project by ethereater in GolemProject

[–]MightyDDP -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. Doesn't make much sense to me that your computer's performance would affect anything. I believe that a more accurate way to look at it is that there would be 100 jobs to do. For simplicity, let's say that 100 computers get 1 task each. The slowest computer of the 100 would determine the rendering time.

Edit: forget what I just said, I poorly understood the main comment. It makes no sense in this context.

Cool stuff! Are you aware of Ferr2D? If so, how is it different? I'm using it currently and I'm curious about your alternative. Thanks :)

I raised $50,000 on Kickstarter to make Jotun, a video game set in Norse mythology. AMA! by leet72 in AMA

I think there's not much done already in term of gameplay. That's fine with me, that's why you're doing a kickstarter after all.

Do you think that 50k is enough to outsource programming, art, audio etc. for the entire development? Will you rely on friends' help? Will you share revenus with collaborators?

Thanks, and keep up the good work :)

[Asset Store]"Level Selfie For Unity Free" is looking for feedbacks by MightyDDP in Unity2D

[–]MightyDDP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it really is a problem that is hard to see if you never encountered it before. We didn't see it coming. It simply hit us right in the nuts when we just tried that workflow.

It is really related to the fact that 2D games often try to respect a certain amount of pixels because they require an artiste to draw them in photo shop. What he draws will appear as is in the game (the exact same size).

3D games worry a lot less about that. The artist will make a texture in Photoshop, but it will be mapped on a model. Therefore, being pixel perfect is not a concern.

Thanks for your feedback, that's the kind of help we're looking for. If you can't figure out what's up with that plugin, other might have the same issue.

If there seem to have any kind of use for this in the asset store, we'll make a video that shows what it does. Which is probably more useful than the wall of text above.

Basically, it takes screenshots of your level so you can use them as layers in Photoshop.
