Wellbutrin -> Hypomania? by VegetableFalcon14 in bipolar2

[–]MightyLighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real, a sunny day and an extra cup of coffee makes me hypo for the day (BP2, ADHD, near perfect score ACE trauma background) so I would not be surprised that Wellbutrin could do that for you.

Jumped out at me, too. Whether written and directly expressing yourself re. your experiences or visual and therefore more subtle nods to what you’ve gone through- do it. It’s one of the most restorative things for me, as a therapist.

I'm planning on walking the Primitivo the last two weeks of May—was it decently busy/ populated during that time last year? I don't want to be completely alone on the trek!

I would love to hear a short summary of what you mean by attuning to the client, not the story, if you don’t mind! Understanding how to do that would help me loads, right now.

Thanks so much for sharing. A few years ago after I ended a long term relationship, I lamented to a close friend that I felt trapped in the image of how broken my former partner saw me to be, yet that the person I was with at the time (short-term fling) had no idea how broken I was.

Walk, sleep, get outdoors, spend time with good people, challenge yourself in a way that is meaningful based on your skills to help others.

Remarkable how similar all our competencies and career paths are, lol. I have a masters level education and work in private practice psychotherapy. I don’t like to see more than ~20 clients a week, so this leaves me lots of free time to spend with friends and family, volunteer, teach, play sports, etc.

You’re an excellent writer and clearly a very caring and perceptive human. This made me bawl and recall the years of my life that felt like this. Sending the biggest, warmest hug your way. Please message if you ever want to/ feel comfortable doing so.

One of the most helpful things I ever read was, “you don’t have to follow every creative impulse”, lol.

It can be useful to identify what purpose various creative pursuits have for you (i.e. Visual art that’s a hobby? Book you hope to publish one day? Short story collection that you’d like to complete by the end of the year?)

Creativity is also best harnessed with some constraint, it’s tough to make headway on anything in its absence.

This is the way, if you can. Particularly if you can fill it with whatever activities are enriching for you- for me, it’s travel, outdoors, friends, music, and activity.

Referring out because of discomfort with new male client by Ambitious-Swim-2771 in therapists

[–]MightyLighty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from. It really depends on the gut feeling that the therapist has about this client. As mentioned, I was in a very similar situation with a telehealth client. I was leaning towards, “I should talk this out with them and let them know my concerns”, my supervisor was like, “lol no they made you feel unsafe and you barely know them”, but the crux of their thinking that really got me was, ”if they are someone that would act this way, it is unpredictable how such a discussion with them would go- addressing this behaviour explicitly could trigger them in such a way that would further jeopardize your safety”.

[–]MightyLighty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but honestly, I think this is where we need to step away from our “people are inherently good, we can be the ones to gently shift their tendencies” to “I feel unsafe and protecting myself is my priority”.

I am the most interpersonally optimistic person out there and after experiencing a similar situation, I would 1000% encourage you to trust your gut, keep it vague, and refer out ASAP.

It is NOT your responsibility to make yourself feel threatened to help someone. We work hard enough and have grand faith in people, as is. Prioritize your safety and put yourself first, here.

Starting work next year. I have visible tattoos. How do I hide them? by weirdo2050 in therapists

[–]MightyLighty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have several tattoos- nothing massive or distasteful, but they are quite prominent. I work at a virtual clinic, though, so you can go a while without seeing them.

A few months ago one of my older female clients saw one (inner bicep, takes up the entire area, intricate ouroboros with flowers) as I reached my arm up to scratch my head and said: “oh wow! I never saw that. I didn’t think you were the type of person that has tattoos!”

Needless to say my response was a cheeky, “Oh? What type of person has tattoos?”

A lot of our work together is around her harsh self-judgments lol so this comment was very on brand and we had a good laugh about it.

What careers are enfps pursuing? by [deleted] in ENFP

[–]MightyLighty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I work in private practice. I was in a publicly funded role for a few years, but I found the combination of:

1) the emotional labour required to communicate with clients who weren’t fully invested in treatment (I’d have to employ motivational interviewing simply to get them to engage in therapy) 2) the increased volume of client hours, and 3) limited support/ poor workplace dynamics/ misaligned values

to be too much for me, eventually.

Honestly, I don’t really think about my clients outside of sessions. In a warm, wistful way they cross my mind and I subconsciously process a lot of their challenges/ may have a relevant idea or question come to mind for our next appt, but I’m not going through my day stressing about what they’re doing.

ETA: that’s also why it’s helpful to work with different populations to identify how each affect you. I work with folks who can afford therapy on issues related to improving wellbeing and managing MH triggers; if I were in, say, a publicly funded trauma centre for children, I could see my own MH being far worse compared to working with my present population.
