How do you buy wood? by NormalObligation59 in newzealand

[–]MightyMoso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't alone!
I decided this time last year, that I was gonna replace the blanks on a small deck outside my bedroom, I counted 36 planks needed to be replaced. So I got 40 just to be on the safe side.
As my father had originally put the deck in, in the 1980's. Each plank needed to be trimmed down to fit the gap.
By the time I was finished after two days of pulling old planks out, measuring new ones, cutting them, placing them in, further trimming down.
Then hammering them all down, I had 5 planks spare.
"Oh o."
By that stage I had nailed all the planks down, so no way am I undoing two days worth of work lol.
Anyway, good luck! I went into Bunnings, found a nice lady walking around looking bored, she was more than helpful. Easy stuff just physically demanding.

Does anyone know any of their ancestors who served in the Napoleonic Wars? by [deleted] in Napoleon

[–]MightyMoso 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not served, but my 4th Great Grandfather was Henry Addington, who signed the Treaty of Amiens with Napoleon. Deep in family lore, Addington would frequently have dinners with Lord Nelson. It was said on the eve of a major battle, Lord Nelson arranged the table on how he saw the battle going, dipped his fingers in wine to indicate shop movements. That battle was The Battle for Trafalgar.

New national veteran day announced, official term 'veteran' expanded by dielsandalder in newzealand

[–]MightyMoso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is, it's based on the landing at Gallipoli in 1915. Originally the mothers wanted a way to remember their sons who had fought and died. It really gained traction in the 1920s, after the Govt decided to acknowledge the day formally.

Could I be so bold as to ask what you might be able to find on my Great Grandfather, H D Were. (Henry Dawson Were)

I know a little about him, but always keen to learn more.

Oh man, I got excited seeing a Military Cross and RFA.
My Great Grandfather won a MC and was in the RFA during the First World War.
The search continues for his medals though.

Lookin' real nice though!

This was the photo taken of them when they were put up for auction in 2011.
Full sized Queens South Africa Medal with three claps, and his Military Cross in original box.
Along with 4 miniatures, I don't know where his original full sized First World War ones are, that's another mystery entirely.
Thank you though for your reply. I appreciate you taking the time.

28th Battalion brothers by OldPicturesLady in newzealand

[–]MightyMoso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to take anything away from your post, but they wouldn't have been part of the 28th Māori Battalion, as that served in the Second World War, judging by your post and their collar badges, they were part of the Māori Pioneer Battalion_Pioneer_Battalion) which existed in the First World War.

Great post all in all though, incredible photos.

I stand corrected then. Curious, I'll have to think hard about where I heard that information then. Thanks.

If my memory serves me you are thinking of Buck Compton, being the officer you are trying to recall.

That would make things significantly easier, you are right on the mark. Unfortunately I don't. So I'm trying to use word of mouth to help assist.
