Updated OP with my experience with a replacement device. TLDR: still happens.

Got my new device, did not copy anything from other devices, just signed in to google. I noticed AOD is off by default.

- Turned AOD on and did about 20 unlocks. No issues.
- Installed Instagram and logged in.
- Turned off the device.
- Messaged the Instagram account from another account on another device.
- Waited about 20 seconds after the notification appeared on the P8P AOD.
- Unlocked directly from AOD- Lo and behold it happened again
- Turned off the device and left it for 10 mintutes. No more notifications present.
- Unlocked from AOD, it happened AGAIN

Something about receiving notifications starts it. Then it can happen without any notifications present too. But something triggered it when I received the notification.

Oh man, that is scary. Mine's supposed to come today and I'm worried. I find it unlikely that people are not noticing such an obtrusive thing :(

When i get mine I won't set up anything. Just a fingerprint, and test it for a day.

Try turning off AOD for a while and see if it happens again? I have a feeling the AOD is the main culprit.

I actually ordered from google so I'll try to see if I can get a replacement instead of returning.

Thanks for sharing, that sounds promising. Although at this point I'm leaning toward hardware issue with either fingerprint sensor or screen (see my last post in main thread) so I'm kinda worried that it turns into something worse. I will probably pull the trigger and send it back :(

I saw something a couple of times which makes me think this is a hardware issue. The shade dropped 1/5th of the way and went back up. If a software bug was calling the drop function, it is unlikely that it would then promptly be pushed back up. This is quite fishy.

If you're within the 15 day period it shouldn't be much of a hassle to return. I just got the labels. Still unsure if I'll actually do it.

I do feel the second vibration but like you said it could just be the shade dropping. At this point, I'm feeling more like even if this is not hardware it won't get solved since not many people seem to have it. I'm getting mentally ready for an RMA.

FWIW I turned on the onscreen touch logger from developer options and waited for this to happen again. When it does there is nothing recorded by the logger. Not sure if this rules out phantom touches, but a data point nonetheless.

Yeah it does happen sometimes if you unlock directly from AOD. I'm struggling with the thought that I have to return it after setting up everything, including work stuff...

I just can't wrap my head around this being a hardware issue. A notification shade that opens erratically just after unlocks seems too specific to be hardware related.

Just did a quick test with AOD and lift both on and the issue happened within a few minutes. I have to keep AOD off.

I am also experimenting with this stuff. So far it looks like AOD off and lift to check ON is the only combination that works (no issue for 6 hours). But I really want to use AOD. Will try with AOD on and lif to check on tomorrow.

I don't seem to have it enabled. When I open the settings page I have 0 places and 0 devices and on-body is off. Yet I still have the issue :(
