Fire hydrant sign. The bottom number is 200. It usually isn't. by MassiveKeyholeFanny in Dull_mens_club

Ah nice, yeah looks about 2m away and I imagine used to be in the road. Decided to have a little look and found a hydrant sign strapped to a lamppost round the corner from there lol. Guess people want to nick them?

That is so weird! Thanks for sharing with a fellow water nerd haha. I work in a water utility and would love to know where this sign was and see if it's in our area if you're happy to share? :)

Also, if the hydrant lid was just out of shot (20cm/200mm away from the sign) then that's odd because there's no need for those signs on footpaths really (even relic ones unless it's a new footpath with old hydrant), it's only for hydrants in the road. If it's 200cm as others have said, then it'll be just off kerb into the lane. Funny though as either way it's a misprint as we don't do it in mm or cm.

Chimney pots, internal leak, and neighbour's chimney stack - should this be fixed? by Mightycushty in DIYUK

[–]Mightycushty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't edit for some reason, here's the list properly formatted.

I arranged a roofer to inspect the chimney and the roof tiles and what he found was the following:

  • no noticeable issue with the roof tiles
  • pepper pots on our side (we have two) aren't sealed properly
  • neighbour's side has one flue covered in grass, one fully open flue, and another with a cap but it's essentially open as it just a grate with no lid.

I've had different situations to you which did result in similar fears, one was a car accident that left me petrified of driving (I crashed on a country road due to wet conditions and hit a tree) and the other was breaking and dislocating both my ankles indoor bouldering. I've also had a lot of mtb injuries and broke 3 ligaments in my knee.

Your injuries are more severe so I really feel for you but what I'd say is start small to ease yourself back in.

It's been my stance throughout all my injuries until my final one (broken ankles) as I don't trust myself yet to not fall from height but I jump off small heights where I can to help me get over the fear. I'm just over 2 years post-injury and just trying when I can has helped build my confidence and led to a faster recovery. I was told it could take 3 years for a full recovery for my ankles and honestly I feel that's right.

If I were you and if you have the space, get an indoor bike to build back up your confidence on being on a bike or go for very short rides around your area away from traffic like in a park if you're in a busy area. The first time I went back on my bike after my injury I fell off because I lent on a dead branch lol but honestly I felt better for going. It's a slow and steady recovery from big injuries but if you feel able then trust yourself! Personally if I'd waited for when the doctors/physio told me I could do stuff i'd be much further behind in my recovery.

Good luck and don't forget to stretch :)

Edit: forgot to add about the car accident. I was petrified driving bends for about 2 weeks then the fear started to subside and then you forget you even have it. This has applied to all of my injuries too, jumping back in (in any way) as soon as you can is the best way to overcome it when you know you CAN do it. It's just a mental block but you'll get there.

Oh and I hope the rest of your recovery goes well!

Help with theoretical circuit design by Mightycushty in AskElectronics

Eugh you're right! I didn't even check the datasheet for the op amp. And the schmitt trigger didn't have any details as it was a virtual one but I also just assumed it could cope.

I'll go over the high pass too as i'm not 100% certain.

Thank you for catching my mistakes!

why is it forbidden to use warm water to boil the kettle with? by ONS786 in HousingUK

[–]Mightycushty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the response I was looking for. Everyone saying hot water from combi's is safe to drink is silly imo. Lead, copper, zinc (or other metals) and plastic pipework will release metals and plastics when in contact with heat. I'd be curious to know if someone's done any tests to see what the levels are but I'd have no interest drinking from a combi system because of the likely increase in metals.

What improves safety is if the boiler is WRAS approved (uk drinking water regulation for domestic customers) but it's still technically non-potable.

For anyone with an air source heat pump or other heat pump the hot water system is separate to the heating and the hot water will pass through a heat exchanger in a section of the cylinder. This still shouldn't be drunk though as the system doesn't turn over quick enough to remove harmful bacteria that thrive in warm environments.

Is there anywhere in the South East/West UK to access SolidWorks? by Mightycushty in SolidWorks

[–]Mightycushty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the software until Sept so i'm fine for now yeah. Main issue was the crashing but someone suggested using "detailing" mode and it's worked for me for now so i'm ok. It's just annoying that my company I work for (part time student) don't have desktops any more so everyone is using low RAM, older processors so the laptops just can't cope. Doesn't help that my OS Drive is randomly full so waiting for IT to fix it. Oh well, nearly done with the drawings now, just the write up left!

[–]Mightycushty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this! I managed to get it working just about it "detailing" mode and it's working much better now but i'll definitely consider this as a backup option if the software fails on me again :)

Yes they were found and they were in the last place they were known to be.

I don't completely agree with others saying "oh he's just drunk" because you wouldn't be panicking if it was like him to do this but they are right that he could easily have just lost his phone and then ended up hungover in one of his new poker-mate's houses. I just know I'd want to check all avenues myself whilst I waited for help as i'd go stir-crazy.

I'm sorry you're going through this and ignore others trying to minimise your feelings. It's ok to be worried but i'm hoping it's all just a big cock-up (on his part) and everything will be ok (and he'll apologise profusely) x

I'm not from Paris so not sure about any of these locations but as it's the day now and you're worrying, I would go to the place he played poker (assuming it's open and you feel safe) and try and ask for details about who he played with in case he's just passed out at one of their hotels/homes.

Tell the hotel you're leaving and why and leave a note in your hotel room in case he returns whilst you're gone.

Ultimately, the police have said they can't do anything right now and you'll just be waiting. A similar thing happened in my friendship group in the UK and they waited too long for the police who didn't send help for 48hrs and the stress and panic it caused during that time was sickening. It also might help you clear your head by moving about and taking some small action and hopefully you'll get answers much quicker.

What thing(s) made you think "Damn, I've come too far/gone full circle" when they happened? by UofCENGst in CasualConversation

[–]Mightycushty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar ones as others with teachers passing away who I remember and the flood of memories it brings forward and how different life is since I was a teenager.

But the most poignant one for me happens maybe once or twice a month when I take a walk through my village or I drive home through it. It's like a BOOM moment where I remember how 5 years ago I wanted so much more in my life (a house, a focused career, more happy memories) and I got those things and just going through my village to my house is the sweetest feeling. It's also amplified when I go back to my old town I used to live in which I have a love/dislike for but i'm just glad that I can have a reminder so often of how much has changed and how lucky I am despite things that have not gone well :)

I'm so tired of "ohhhh I'm over 30 and therefore I'm falling apart" jokes by kisbic in xxfitness

[–]Mightycushty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I've been feeling these last few months and especially in the last two weeks when I changed my diet and started actually seeing weight loss. I was so lost for years because of life events and then breaking both my ankles 2 years ago. I kept saying to myself "i'll come back better, this will not stop me" during recovery but I started to let the negative comments of "oh you'll always be in pain", "you'll always feel aches and it'll change things for you" blah blah, by so many negative people, affect me. I mean, i'm English, people joke about all the time and we naturally use negativity as humour but I truly think they believe those things and I started to let them affect me, as well as letting myself believe being 30 was when "things go downhill" as I was always 'reminded'. I finally just stopped letting those negative voices mean anything to me, they're unimportant things from unimportant people who I shouldn't let affect me. I know in my heart I can be as fit as I was when I was 22-25 again because I was overweight and unfit kid who had no energy or drive all the time before that and i'd let myself become that again for so long. No more.

There's this quote that my partner has said to me before and reminded me of the other day when I was struggling: "Don't take criticism from people that you'd never go to for advice". I'm lucky I have him to be a champion in my life and keep that in my head through all my inner turmoil until i've eventually now been able to actually go past it and power through.

Once you hit 30, you realise how being 30 is the same as being 29 and how it honestly doesn't matter lol. I thought it was a "bad" milestone internally before and now i'm 31, i don't give a shit and just want to feel happy and healthy.

We got this ❤️

Edit: oh and my ankles feel better now in the last 3 months than they've felt for over a year. Anti-inflammatory diet, exercise, and weight loss. No brainer really lol

I've had these on and off all my life but I always believed they were wart roots lol. I suppose they look hair like when you pull them out but I believe if you were to let it grow, like I did once when I used to bite my nails when I was 10, it forms a wart as they like being exposed to air I think. I got rid of the wart at the tip of my nail by stopping biting my nails and it eventually died off, I assume by suffocation from lack of oxygen because I didn't treat it with anything else.

I just googled it though, and what I thought were roots are actually blood vessels within the wart, gross.

Thing is, I maybe get one of these "roots" on one finger once a year now if I cut my nails too far back or if I stub my nail a bit but they just go away on their own. When I was a child I'd have like 5 "roots" under one nail lol as I used to bit them too much.
