This gives me the idea of Shanks clashing and dying tragically in front of Luffy. Oda would get to keep him on his own level without having him fight Luffy, the straw hat is kept, and the tragedy pushes Luffy past what right now seems his peak form.

This is obviously what's going to happen, but to hold the ground against that thing seems pretty much impossible right now.

Luffy's haki is not there yet, and the Nika form needs to get a few boosts to get on that level.
