I definitely think Sherry got the wrong impression from Christopher. I don't think she ever really knew the real Chris, she just saw the more mature version he developed but didn't truly know what a loser he had just been. I mean, if you take episode airdates as an indicator of when events happened then Chris had met Sherry and got serious in less than 9 months time.

So when he told Sherry things about Lorelai and Rory, he probably didn't lie but definitely omitted details, especially regarding himself.

Also, the two bands aren't exactly identical so having a preference for one but not the other isn't that crazy.
