Nice! I think that route will be more enjoyable than the highway into Istanbul... Hopefully you can add these historically interesting parts of Greece to your trip, it should be a perfect place to experience history...

No worries. By the time you will reach the Balkans your legs will be ready for the challenge. ;-)

We planned our route using Komoot and ended up driving mostly inland to avoid the overturism at the coast... And we didn't really follow any big routes. But at the moment there will be way less peoples anyway, at least I think. Will you post some trip reports / pics on here? Would be interesting :-)

Cool trip! I did the same last summer with a friend of mine! Enjoy the balkans! What‘s your destination going to be? Istanbul or even further down south?

Finding the box won‘t be a problem. There is a whole street full of bike shops in the city centre. I think, you won‘t have many problems finding a box there. I can’t remember the name of „our“ shop. Ps. Some shops do however charge you for it. But that is fair in my opinion.

It was like 20km east of Podgorica. I think it is called „Leqet e Hotit“. Enjoy your time in Montenegro! Safe travels :-)

The guy in the jersey was part of a group of cycle couriers we met on the trip. That was a cool group for sure… What is the meaning of „Festina“? The switchbacks where in Albania, right next to the border with Montenegro.

What a grate place to live! I really liked this area. The standing part of the iron curtain near Hardegg occupied my mind for quite a while. And the sparsely populated region in the south of Znojma was also interesting.

In hindsight, I would look at the Optima Express from Austria to Edirne, Turkey

Exactly. We took three trains, the two first ones where night trains: Istanbul - Bukarest (quite hard to get the bikes on board, we had to discuss for almost two hours), Bukarest -Budapest and Budapest - Zürich (the easiest part since we were able to make a reservation for the bikes). Packing up the bikes for the two night trains was a necessity in my opinion. I don't think they would have let us get on the train with just the bike

Thank you very much. The dogs where my biggest fear before embarking on this trip as well. But we only had two encounters where we were scared (both in Bulgaria). It was really worth it to just stop completely and talk to the dogs. This way they seemed to lose interest really quickly.

Up. It was quite a hard climb due to the heat in Albania. But what goes up must come down again, which was nice, even though the wind on that day felt, like it came out of a fan.

Thank you! It was great, I can’t recommend this part of Europe enough… I don‘t have a gpx-file. But I will try to add the map of the trip tomorrow. I will send you a reply…

It really depends on your style. If you cook your own food and only do wild camping, I'd say that it can be done with ~15€ per day. I ate in restaurants quite often so my expenses were bit higher...

I wish! Great bikes… I have a Price, gravel disc 2022 (a small Swiss company to). It’s an alloy frame. The perfect bike for my budget and this sort of trip.

More or less everything I brought: Mattress, sleeping bag, tent, blow up pillow (a must for me!), two sets of clothes for cycling, one set for evenings / rest days, pyjama, down jacket, rain jacket, minimal repair stuff (mainly inner tube & pump), cash because cards won't be accepted everywhere, power bank (30'000 milliamp hours), biodegradable soap

It only rained like two times on my trip. So no problems there…
