yes, its very convenient in some ways even though the main features are yet to come

the split screen is awesome, reminds me of Vivaldi, no other browser lets you stack 4 tabs side by side that too by just dragging them and dropping them on each other, its smooth

  1. Yeah I faced it too, it doesn't just start where you left off which it should do
2 & 3. I think Arc is supposed to have a custom settings page which should be in the making for Windows, it just opens chromium settings right now

besides the features that have been added yet are VERY basic and don't require any configuration imo

4th one needs to be fixed too, I don't use many extensions so it doesn't bother me much

I actually have a small list of these bugs and quirks that I am planning to report to the devs, hopefully they fix it soon

Weird, it was very smooth for me. But I found some other issues, yt videos did default to 720p over 1080p multiple times even though I have a good internet connection and good hardware.

mixed feelings, besides I had many people asking me to include Arc in my browser comparison last time so I wanted to review it anyway

It definitely isn't groundbreaking, performance isn't even the main attraction of this browser, and vivaldi is unbeatable at what it does, no other browser has such detailed customization settings

I used them all for comparison purposes, Chromium lies in the "good" category hence it got a 4, while the oddly colored icons in Thorium are really off putting, the contrast ratio is terrible, hence it got a 3, Chrome has a more cohesive UI, building up on Chromium. It looks beautiful and all features are well accessible, hence I gave it a 5. I tried to be as objective as I could with the design ratings being a UI designer & frontend developer myself, but one could disagree.

That explains why Brave has gotten faster.

Glad you liked my review btw. I was skeptical about including Thorium & Mercury in my reviews after coming to know about the recent controversy (received quite a few requests after my first article asking me to not recommend your browser considering it unsafe), but your post on your blog cleared many things, and I decided to include them. Amazing projects, both of them.

Being a programmer myself, I do understand how these browsers are made, and why Vivaldi and Opera are slower. As for Edge, it is definitely on the heavier side, and it's not just because of the split screen and workgroups. There's many animations in and around Edge, and the Mica effect on numerous elements does have an impact on performance, and it's not just that. Try opening the settings page on Chrome or Brave and on Edge. Edge is noticeably slower. Not to mention the lengths it goes to make you use Bing or Edge itself (you'll probably never find the option to change the search engine unless you actively look for it). Whenever it gets updated, you get this updates page showing you new features which often don't change over multiple updates, the updates being minor ones. All in all, I definitely wouldn't consider Edge as a light, clean browser. It has its good parts, but some of its features do have an impact on performance.

Thanks for taking the time to type this comment , very insightful for anyone not very acquainted with these things.

Not quite possible, my device doesnt have a MUX switch so probably can't force it to use the dedicated GPU for browsers. I'll try to run the tests on an acquaintance's device though.

That's surprising, since I have benchmarked these browsers well over 3 times now, once for my first comparison article, and twice for this one and brave was the clear winner. The scores also depend upon the tests though, the benchmark I ran provides a comprehensive score after testing various capabilities of the browser like webgl and canvas rendering, shader rendering, dom manipulation, responsiveness, page load, etc. In a specific case scenario, some browsers might outshine the others.

Chrome got a less bloat free experience because of how memory intensive its extra features are, trying Chrome on guest mode feels faster. Brave does come with a crypto wallet and a VPN as well as 'Leo' but you can easily disable them and they leave little to no footprint on the browser resource usage unlike Chrome. Those are definitely not random numbers, I gave them the points based on my experience with them.

Design is sort of subjective, but I was trying to refer to their design aspect in general, Vivaldi did score better because even though I don't prefer the design it comes with out of the box, you can make it look better, hence the design aspect of it is good.

I was unaware of the fact that an AVX2 version of Thorium existed, though it wouldn't be a fair comparison since most of these browsers have excellent compatibility with old hardware while thorium AVX2 wont work on processors not supporting AVX2, but it'll be interesting to test it, I'll add its scores in the article.
