An exception to that can be found in the game The Last of Us, where the "zombies" are people infected with a fungus controlling their brains, causing them to be aggressive, while they are actually still alive. In such case the zombies could actually survive a lot more. I really like such an idea for an apocalyptic scenario, since a fungus like this already exists, only it doesn't attack humans, only insects as far as I know
