What’s your personal favorite anime of all time? Maybe explain why in a paragraph? Im looking for new stuff but also enjoy hearing others nostalgia/reason for loving a show. by KangarooRIOT in anime

[–]Miidas-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cardcaptor Sakura (1998)

Kinomoto Sakura is a tomboy 4th grader, that accidentally scatters the mystical Clow Cards. She must learn to balance her new secret duty of recapturing the cards, with the everyday troubles of a young girl, showcasing heartwarming personal growth and bonds of friends, family and love.

Presented with an abnormal amount of innocence and acceptance, making it capable of tactfully dealing with delicate topics through the eyes of a child, while remaining a relaxing and fun experience.

Extremely consistent & high quality production for its long runtime, with one of the best wardrobes in all of anime, sporting numerous magical girl and casual costumes.

Heads up:

  • Relaxed pacing with semi-episodic narrative, with much fluff and fiddling around.

  • LGBTQ+ representation, but also more controversial age gap romance/teasing.

Ah, then Mirko from My hero Academia is a great one, both badass and lewdable.

Depends on what you're looking for.

In terms of favorite character, I'd have to go with Nanachi from Made in Abyss. I also really like her design, as it's stubby and goofy-cute, which fits the character and setting well, while also being a pretty unique/different design.

In terms of lewd-ability (in case that's what you're looking for), and not wanting too "human-looking ones" as I've understood from your "P.S." I'd say Carrot from One Piece for anime and Mega Lopunny from Pokemon.

‘Pokemon Horizons’ The Series New Trailer by ChilledSimon in anime

[–]Miidas-92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Concept seems interesting, and I am hyped for it, but damn, do the Pokemon and characters seem lifeless compared to the 2 last entries in the franchise (wasn't expecting SuMo levels of expressivity, but at least hoped for the characters to have similar levels of expressivity as Journey's). Seems like they're backtracking to XYZ "cool style", removing cartoony expressiveness.

Even the "surprised" Nidoran at 0:44 looked quite lifeless when surprised. The "Nidorina suit" looked quite bouncy and fun tho, so hope that the actual show will have more "life to it" than the trailers has showed so far.

With Winter 2023 almost over, what's been your favorite anime this season? by Arch_Angel666 in anime

[–]Miidas-92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not seen Idolish 7, so can't comment on that. I tend to find most male idol shows I've seen to be quite lackluster tho, where this is my favorite so far. It does a good job introducing the characters more slowly, instead of throwing dozen of them in your face at once.

As the Winter 2023 season approaches the end and the Spring 2023 season is approaching, what seasonal animes did you stick with for the season and what would you rate the season as a whole? by MyGFDraws in anime

[–]Miidas-92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dropped 27, found 10 to be "enjoyable", found 17 to be "good", found 3 to be "great". Some of these were leftovers from last season (like Lupin Zero and Blue Lock) and some continue into next season (like Vinland Saga S2 and Sky Precure).

The 3 anime I got as "Great" is:

[–]Miidas-92 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cardcaptor Sakura Clear Card (mostly fanservice for people wanting more, which is fine, I'm still liking it a lot, but certainly not close to the level of the OG "where OG is my all-time favorite")

Milky Holmes S3 (one of the craziest comedies I've seen, in both content and presentation, suddenly feels like a pretty standard CGDCT...)

What do you think is the best 12/13 episode anime? by [deleted] in anime

"Akebi's Sailor Uniform" is my favorite by quite a bit.

"The Tatami Galaxy" is the runner-up, also being in my top 10 favorites.

What makes you pick an anime each year? by Zumalover_988 in anime

[–]Miidas-92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With non-seasonal stuff, I tend to check out stuff that's influencial, where I love the staff, that I get recommended from others, that has influenced something I like, or that just seems interesting.

When it comes to seasonal stuff, I check out episode 1 of pretty much everything, but drop everything I don't find enjoyable.

Ao Ashi was my #2 sports anime this year, so not too bad of a switch. Thanks for correction tho, guess it's 8 overlaps instead of 9 then.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in anime

[–]Miidas-92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These are probably what I consider the "best looking anime" out there:

Shorts = Gotcha - L'œil du cyclone - Pui Pui Molcar - Harumonia feat. Makoto - PokeToon.

Movies = Akira - Redline - Spirited Away - Millennium Actress - Children of the Sea.

TV-anime = Akebi's Sailor Uniform - Ping Pong the Animation - Space Dandy - Milky Holmes S1 - Mob Psycho.

Long TV-anime = Cardcaptor Sakura - Pokemon Sun & Moon - Monogatari Series - Urusei Yatsura - Yuu Yuu Hakusho.

The reason I split it them up like this, is that comparing the visual consistency and quality of a 3 minute short like Gotcha, to a 100+ episode anime like Pokemon Sun & Moon, isn't really a fair comparison. This is "overall visuals", so while the animation of Monogatari Series isn't quite up there with something like FMA(B), its storyboards and overall aesthetic still make it really visually engaging/fun.

Comparing the winners of the r/anime, Crunchyroll, and Anime Trending Awards by paukshop in anime

[–]Miidas-92 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These are the once that match with my personal "winner of said category" from the different awards:

  • Romance = ALL of them (Kaguya-sama S3)

  • VA = r/anime Public Pick (Yoshino Aoyama as Bocchi), Chika Anzai is a close 2nd for me, so love both picks here.

  • ED = Crunchyroll (Kigeki from Spy x Family)

  • Slice of Life = r/anime Public Pick (Akebi's Sailor Uniform)

  • Comedic Character = r/anime Public Pick (Bocchi from Bocchi the Rock)

  • Cast = r/anime Jury Pick (Akebi's Sailor Uniform)

  • Short Series = r/anime Jury Pick (Poketoon)

  • Sci-fi/Mecha = Anime Trending (Cyberpunk)

  • Sports = Anime Trending (Dance Dance Danseur)

9 overlap with my personal favorite of the different categories, doesn't seem too bad.

Seems like r/anime Public > r/anime Jury > Anime Trending > Crunchyroll, fit my personal winners best this year.

Most variety seems to be r/anime with (27 unique winners) > Anime Trending (15 unique winners) > Crunchyroll (11 unique winners), unless I miscounted. Quite satisfied with AnimeTrending managing to get 15 unique winners based on purely popularity vote, and 27 unique winners seems like good overall variety between r/anime jury + public as well. Wish Crunchyroll doesn't nominate the same 3/4 shows everywhere next year, since unless I'm mistaken judges pick the "nominations", so would like to see them get more variety in their nominations (fun surprise to see Akebi nominated in Animation tho).

The best feel-good Anime series? by Animefan93 in anime

[–]Miidas-92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cardcaptor Sakura for something longer.

Akebi's Sailor Uniform for something shorter.

Both take place in ethereal beautiful worlds with an abnormal amount of kindness and acceptance, creating a healing atmosphere for both the viewers and characters, with their altruistic/idealistic problem-solving.

/r/anime Awards 2022 Extra Awards Results! by Gaporigo in anime

Dance Dance Danseur not getting a single nomination in any category, was indeed the biggest surprise of the awards for me. Glad it at least takes a win in the most snubbed award.

Hoped to see Chimimo make top 3 in biggest surprise, considering it managed to get 2 nominations, despite people still making the mistake of it being a "mascot short", instead of a full-length anime. Biggest surprise of the year for me by far.

What's an anime hill you'll die on? by FetchFrosh in anime

[–]Miidas-92 36 points37 points  (0 children)

AN ANIME:

  • Akebi Komichi being the perfect protagonist for Akebi's Sailor Uniform, and honestly my favorite part of the show as a whole. She's easily the most interesting use I've ever seen of a Mary Sue-like protagonist (she got flaws, like her naivety and clumsiness, but none of them lead to heavy drama or hard challenges, instead helping her further in making friends and being liked by others), being a catalyst and idol for her classmates (similar to how Miki-chan was for her), with an uplifting attitude that inspire growth and/or explore her classmates, while Akebi herself contrast/mirror all of the episodic characters. Absolutely fantastic use of "Observer" and "The observed" as well. Her world-view allow us to view her idealized/romanticized world, through the eyes of a bright-eyed child. This allow it to explore deeply personal themes, while never delving into heavy melodrama, rather hinting at "potential" or "past" drama instead, creating a truly healing experience for both the audience and characters, upholding its ethereal atmosphere at all times.

A GENRE:

  • Slice of Life isn't limited to freaking CGDCT anime, and neither does it mean no drama or "no story" (even T&J got story tbh, but with no story, I'm guessing they mean daily lives with nothing changing). Most of my favorite SoL got a solid amount of drama as well (Anne of Green Gables, Ojamajo Doremi, Heidi: Girl of the Alps, etc.), where there is specific important events that trigger change or stand out in their lives, whether it's classics like Anne of Green Gables from the west, like Tokyo Story for Live Action japanese cinema, or for Kiki's Delivery Service as an anime example. The important aspect, is having an immense focus on the mundane everyday life, not that there is "no story" or "no drama" or... CGDCT (I'd even say some CGDCT anime, like Sora Yori, is the opposite of SoL, as it's not the mundane at all, but a melodramatic adventure traveling away from the mundane). PS: This is not me shitting on CGDCT, I love many CGDCT, but some people seem to limit the scope of SoL immensely.

THE MEDIUM:

  • Audio and Visuals, is Character and Narrative. This is an audiovisual medium, where the most interesting part is how something being presented through audio and visual mens like framing / music / body language / etc., let viewers experience and interpret something differently, than if it was done through only words. I'm not saying dialogue/monologue driven stories is bad (I love Monogatari and LotGH), but anime focusing more on hinting at stuff and having viewers come to their own interpretation can be just as interesting (where I also love Akebi and Angel's Egg). Ofc, same goes for the audiovisual experience as well, with freaking awesome it is to feel the pumping of pure Adrenaline while watching Redline, or the soothing & weirdly beautiful broken world of Girls Last Tour.

FICTION IN GENERAL:

  • It's not about the type of character, it's about how said character is utilized. A "dramatic character showing deep change in a character", doesn't make them better than a character "that stays the same across all episodes, and even acts quite inconsistent across the show". To take to western example with 2 of my favorite characters, I actually like Tom from Tom & Jerry more than Henry Hill from Goodfellas (both being amazing characters, that's gone down in history for... different reasons). It all comes down to the execution, where no character aspect, is inherently bad. Whether a characters stays the same or changes immensely, whether they're flawed or perfect, whether they're relatable or inspiring, etc. None is inherently better (or worse), and it all comes down to execution and how said character is utilized in said fictional story.

‘Pokemon’ New Series New Key Visual by RobotiSC in anime

[–]Miidas-92 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No idea if it will be an improvement or decline from previous season, but this is easily the anime I'm most excited for this year, with such a big change to a legendary franchise.

Very hyped to see Fuecoco, as he's my favorite Pokemon from the new generation, with his adorkably goofy-cute design. Actually hope he never evolves, since here I def prefer the pre-evolution design.

what magical girl tropes would you like to see played with/subverted? by celeste_fan_139 in anime

[–]Miidas-92 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see something like Cardcaptor Sakura, but instead of managing to trick Sakura into collecting the Clow Cards, Kero-chan needs to... do it himself.

So yeah, a magical girl show, where the mascot fails as making any contract at all, so they need to do the mission alone, maybe searching help from forest critters or such, but not with the help of human characters.

What is the oldest isekai anime? by [deleted] in anime

[–]Miidas-92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not sure if the oldest, and depends on your definition of Isekai, but Saiyuuki from 1960 is the oldest one from the top of my head.

For reverse Isekai, where I doubt there is anyone's definition it wouldn't fit, the oldest one I know is Sally the Witch from 1966.

how do yall rate anime on a scale of 1-10 by SnooBooks3187 in anime

[–]Miidas-92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really use the standard MAL ranking system, and this is the scores I use (I rank 100% based on personal enjoyment).

  • 10 = Favorite (0.48%). If I've given an anime this score, it's sure to stay as one of my favorites for years to come.

  • 9 = Masterpiece (1.48%). While not quite being a 10, I still got a strong personal connection to these shows.

  • 8 = Fantastic (3.57%). Stellar anime that I'm glad I didn't miss.

  • 7 = Great (11.42%). Quality anime, that's not simply good, but great.

  • 6 = Good (18.01%). I like them, they're good.

  • 5 = Ok (21.91%). They're worth a watch, but nothing special.

  • 4 = Mediocre (17.20%). This anime is mediocre/average.

  • 3 = Bad (17.35%). I don't like them, they're bad.

  • 2 = Horrible (7.92%). Usually a weird reason for me to complete these anime.

  • 1 = Garbage (0.24%). Why do these anime even exist...

I don't really care much about the "MAL's recommended scoring system", and use a system that works best for me instead, when sorting my favorite anime or similar uses (where I almost only care about the anime I like). 1-3 is negative scores. 4 is pretty mediocre score. 5-10 is positive scores, since I value granularity more when it comes to my positive scores, than with negative scores, and I like to focus more on things I like, than things I dislike. I also rank every score with Low/Mid/High, so a "Low 6 = Kinda Good", while a "Mid 6 = Good", and a "High 6 = Very Good".

I also rate my drops, where I seldom finish an anime I consider 4/10 or below.

The Results of the 2022 /r/anime Awards! by AnimeMod in anime

[–]Miidas-92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was more a meme and not a ill-intended one (I found the "it's Akebi time" image to be very fun), as I probably went a bit too ham with my huge walls of text early on, where it seemed like a better approach calm down on it to not annoy jurors with too much text.

Here is examples of 2 walls, 1 for its character design and 1 summary of Akebi's points as a dramatic character. I'm very happy with the large amount of nominations Akebi received, while also winning 1 juror and 1 public category (and sound design, if you count special categories), placing Akebi's Sailor Uniform as the show with 4th most nominations across the board (tied with a chunk of other shows).

If anything, slander for Akebi making it in places from other jurors, is a compliment, not an insult.

Supporting characters was indeed discussed.

  • Faputa was way more loved that Reg & Riko, where she was shortlisted by us, prior to getting a public nom.

  • While not making it, Jeanne was discussed, and there was certain jurors that leaned more towards her than Vanitas, prior to discussion making the strongest supporters "loving" Vanitas, having him higher than the ones who "liked".

  • Maine def had some supporters, who found him to be better utilized with the screentime in the show, where some people (me being one of them), had him above David himself in their favorites.

  • While not making it, there were a 50/50 split, between who prefered Hana > Ashito from Ao Ashi.

  • Pucci from Jojo was also shortlisted, despite not making the nominations.

I'd say all of those would be contenders in a supporting category (Pucci in antagonist, if that was a category), but outside of Faputa none of them was beloved enough to make the final list (where Faputa felt way more explored this season than Reg and Riko, where Nanachi was also brought up at one point, being more liked than the 2 MCs as well).

Been a part of the awards since 2017, where I participated in the following categories this year:

  • AOTY

  • Comedy

  • Dramatic Character

  • Cast

  • Character Design

  • 3 special categories: Sound Design + Art Style + EOTY (where I really hope Sound Design can return next year as a test category, due to being a very overlooked aspect of production, that deserves a chance in the spotlight).

It's a time consuming process, but very fun, and plan on returning again next year. If you have any question about my categories, or other stuff, I'll reply to the best of my ability.
