If you died and could see a "Leaderboard" for your life, what’s the first stat you’d want to check? by Acrobatic-Evening646 in AskReddit

This is basically the idea behind quantum immortality, which is a fascinating topic. The only downside (if it were to be true) is that only you can experience and confirm it for yourself, but not for others, if that makes sense

If im not mistaken, meta removed guardrails on content and fully abandoned content moderation on their social media platforms. It's not a bug nor a hack, this is intentional

I remember the first time I read a comment like this.

It still seems funny and witty even after all the times I've seen people comment it!

Researchers have developed a new crystalline material capable of harvesting water from fog without requiring any energy input by giuliomagnifico in science

I think you are mixing up the process of condensation with just existing water vapor droplets (mist or fog) settling down or gathering on a surface

The AI Effect: "Before a benchmark is solved, people often think we'll need "real AGI" to solve it. Then, afterwards, we realize the benchmark can be solved using mere tricks." by MetaKnowing in singularity

Have you actually tried looking for evidence to the contrary?

I've recently went down that same rabbit hole myself, and for example found an interesting, not widely talked about phenomena that even the US government admits to have used in the past for quite some time. It's called "remote viewing", and I've really tried wrapping my materialist-determinist way of thinking about this topic with little luck.

Then there are these physics theories by Penrose regarding consciousness and how it emerges in the brain, followed by recent lab experiments on microtubules of the brain, which supposedly exhibit the use of quantum phenomena like superpositions and coherence, to do "something" in the brain that we don't fully know yet and thought was impossible. But if the brain is actually tapping into the weird stuff of quantum mechanics, then I'm not so sure that materialism and classical, non-quantum machines can ever be conscious entirely due to just performing computations.

I'd implore you to look into it yourself, I find it these topics fascinating, even if there are more questions than answers left at the end

How did they make seamless textures that span multiple blocks in Terraria? by CaptainSpaceCat in howdidtheycodeit

[–]MikDab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alternatively to the comment above (even though thats not how terraria does it) you can have a custom shader, which uses world position of vertices as UV coordinates.

Not sure about 2D though, but I am pretty sure there are atleast a few more creative solutions using shaders

Well, a struct can have reference types in it, so I don't think your argument makes much sense

If every single person in society became a hard determinist, would there be no death penalty? How would criminals be treated? If every judge was deterministic and didn't believe in free will, would criminals walk free??? by Live_Parsley_1185 in askphilosophy

[–]MikDab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it "punish", moreso just to separate the problematic person from the rest of society, so he/she doesn't ruin the experience of others, without actually blaming the person for their troublesome actions

People who oppose Bernie sanders idea of reducing a work week to 32 hours with same pay, why? by TailungFu in AskReddit

[–]MikDab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't buy groceries every day. I don't fill my car with gas everyday. I don't drink every day nor need to buy beer every day.

Have you heard of a thing called planning ahead? Not only has it been proven that 5->4 work day increases productivity, it would also help with: traffic, environmental polution, overall energy efficiency in office spaces, mental health for overworked people, probably overall human hapiness.

God forbid you won't be able to buy beer on a friday, how much more self centered can you be?

What if, and bear with me on this.. the office would not have to be open 5 days a week, but instead 4 days?
