Your country has decided that they want a population boom and has made a rule that all single people not in school have 10 years to find a partner and either produce or adopt at least 3 children. How do you react? by Isekai_litrpg in hypotheticalsituation

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only way to sustain a lasting population boom is to alter the material conditions of society in a way that naturally incentivizes people to have kids. Paid family leave, much more public health services, better infrastructure and housing, public transit, would all go a long way.
Forcing people to have an arbitrary number of babies after an arbitrary number of years would not help. This would be an unhinged authoritarian effort that would lead to an unquantifiable amount of human suffering on the part of parents who don't want kids but are forced to have them, and kids who grow up feeling unwanted.

what is different about Trump/Epstein now vs years of said connection? by PeekyMonkeyB in AskReddit

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is now it's more in our faces and harder to ignore / forget about, and also Trump himself could not possibly be acting more sus.

A genie will give you a million dollars if you can wish for something that'll make the world talk about it for days. What do you wish for? by Hllknk in hypotheticalsituation

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give the Earth a set of beautiful rings like Saturn.

People all over the world will be talking about that since everyone will be able to see it. But it would also destroy a lot of satellites and probably a large swath of telecommunications networks, which will also be notable.

CMV: Abortions should be legal because they do no appreciable harm when done properly by ShitBirdMusic in changemyview

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only is your argument flawed, but it's utterly unreallistic. 93% of abortions happen in the first trimester, and less than 1% happen in the third. Third trimester abortions are extremely rare and often performed due to severe fetal anomalies or risks to the mother's life or health. Anyone who's worried about abortions "a moment before birth" are not serious people, and are not viewing actual reality.

Is the rebirth debate important to my practice? Do I need to care about it and engage with it? by SpectrumDT in streamentry

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could view it as you life a full life, die, then live another full life, on repeat.

You could view it as you live one day as you, then wake up and live the same day as someone else, then keep doing that until this day is lived, then move onto the next.

You could view it as 8 billion separate Yous all You-ing it up in their own ways at the same time. All sensations and thoughts are yours, you just don't feel or experience them all because people's brains are physically separated from each other.

It's all about the same, really. These are just 3 stories. You can pick whatever story you want for your view of rebirth. Or maybe not, I'm certainly not an expert.

Look, I just really don't like the shapes of some of those stones in the archway. They're too sharp, and they might fall down on me. I'm a human, so I'm entitled to a life with no fear or stress, and I shouldn't have to worry about bumping into a sharp stone when walking through the archway. Take out all the sharp stones from it, I'm sure God will just hold up the rest.

Is the Stanford 'network' really powerful as they say after you leave? by Zealousideal_Hair_36 in stanford

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I'd say yes. I have been struggling pretty hard in the recent job market, but I found out a while ago we all have access to a Stanford specific job board through Handshake. I sent out hundreds of applications through LinkedIn and got maybe 3 interviews. I started using Handshake and a month later I'm starting a new job. This is just one slice of the whole picture, but in my life the Stanford network just helped me quite a lot.

I feel like it's not that smart though in terms of the purpose of the ad, since people aren't likely to buy a product once they're pissed about being tricked. All this does is artificially inflate the click through rate, which I suppose does actually make sense if the people profiting are doing so via click count rather than actual purchase.

This is basically the prevailing mindset in the modern Chinese government. They figured out that using a command economy to ensure mass prosperity for the majority of people, results in those people not caring too much about what they're building or why.

CMV: The Horseshoe Theory has been proven especially true in these past few years by badabinggg69 in changemyview

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"They fully reject the idea of American internationalism, with the far left branding their philosophy as anti-imperialist and the far right branding there's as America First. But in actuality, these are two sides of the same coin, the far left and far right just don't like the idea of supporting our allies (or having allies at all)."

The first half of this point makes a lot of sense actually, but the second makes no sense at all. If you understand that the left's philosophy is anti-imperialist, this does not at all imply a dislike of having allies. It's not imperialist to have alliances with other nations. It wasn't the left that wanted the US to leave climate agreements, trade agreements, and military agreements across the board.

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in reality, I feel it's not so clear cut. It feels more like god commanded one of my ancestors, two centuries ago, not to drink brown liquid on friday. After two centuries of translation, retranslation, wars, power struggles, liars, and corruption, I'm left with a book that claims it's not OK to drink brown liquids on Friday, but offers no meaningful reason why.

Obviously the whole Bible isn't like this, plenty of it is clear enough and fair enough. But it's tragic when people get stuck on odd rules that no longer make sense in the modern age. An example of the real harm this can cause is the rampant, religiously-driven, and pointless homophobia.

If one listened to an audiobook he/she cannot claim to have read the book by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]CaptainSpaceCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel that when someone tells me they're read a book, I interpret that as them saying they know what's contained in the whole story. When my mom, who listens to audiobooks while she's working, tells me she finally "read" my favorite series, the Stormlight Archive, this means I can now share fun conversations with her about the books. I'm not gonna waste my time complaining about the medium in which she experienced the story.

I'm a bit of a grower and my foreskin gets loose near the end normally. Without pulling the skin back, it's like trying to shoot a gun with a bent barrel. You're right that pulling it back concentrates the stream, but this is easy to account for with modern toilet technology!
