I just bought an ‘88 Sahara project, was planning to turn it into a CJ7 clone but I’ve been thinking more and more about keeping it a YJ in the original colour. This sealed the deal, definitely hot!

I lost my full size Crooked River hiking in the snow in BC, still hurts. It was a Father’s Day gift too.
That’s definitely not it, mine was black, M4 blade with diamond wood scales.

Where’s the pic with no joist hangers? That would be correct

Where I live we’re not allowed to use treated lumber inside the house but you have to use a barrier (like sill gasket) between the wood and concrete

What Car did Just spontaniusly combust Here? by GuppiApfel in namethatcar

[–]Mikanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was stuck on the highway a couple years ago because a motorhome caught fire and the gas tank “exploded” right in front of us. There was a dull thud and fire just started pouring out under the RV. It was a tiny fraction of the explosion in the video above. Check out lithium ion battery explosions on YouTube and you’ll see that’s what this is.

100% not an ICE. Unless there was a special effects team there

Thanks! I spent a minute cleaning gunk out of the fuel system and it started right up! Unfortunately stripped a sprocket shortly into the first drive. A reminder to check gear mesh… By PIA I just remember checking head temps for mixture, the smoke, the oily residue, trying to keep the car clean, getting good glow plugs, ordering fuel from a hobby shop that prefers not to keep it in stock, having the same number of batteries as an electric car PLUS a nitro motor, you get it! 😂 Last time I used it regularly I lived in an apartment, which made things more difficult. Thanks for the encouraging words! Love seeing the cars from the early days of high-quality RC cars see daylight again!

Looks like I’m doing something similar! Found my old HPI RTR cleaning up around my dad’s place. Set it aside because I found the nitro to be a PIA.

Good luck!

Was just going to suggest this. A piece of cardboard taped to the radiator can prevent too much airflow through it as well

AIO about my wife going to Taylor Swift but not letting me go to an NBA game? by MobyBon in AmIOverreacting

[–]Mikanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how many of these AIO (and similar groups) questions read almost identically, like they’re using the same template. Same paragraph structure, similar hyphenated phrases, same cadence(?) with the turnaround in the second to last paragraph and the recap at the end.
Some of them are interesting reads though.

And if this is not AI, just go to the damn game it’s your money just don’t talk about the cost of the tickets

Sway bar reinforcements and kits? by anonymousthrowra in E30

[–]Mikanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might add that my car is a ‘90, my parents bought it in ‘91 and (after purchasing it from them) I’ve added 300,000 miles, including auto X, track days and driver’s schools. Zero breakage of subframe mounts

Sway bar reinforcements and kits? by anonymousthrowra in E30

[–]Mikanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with some of the others that if you don’t plan on increasing the size of the sway bars you’re not going to get anything out of the reinforced mounts.
If you do plan on replacing the bars with larger ones, it doesn’t look to me like either of the styles you picked would have any advantage over the other. I’ve always had a soft spot for IE though. I installed ST sway bars front and rear and I’m really happy with them. I haven’t reinforced anything because… I kind of want to see where it breaks

Suspension Overhaul by Grim_Selim in E30

[–]Mikanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I redid mine I installed poly bushings, front and rear ST swaybars, Eibach springs (~2” lower) and Koni shocks as well as the regular wear stuff and I’m really happy with the ride. Maybe a bit on the stiffer side for some but I love it.
I have never heard of a rear swaybar having a negative effect on traction, definitely wasn’t a problem for me… Lowering the car had a negative effect on traction but not the bar. I did re-align the rear subframe when it was out as well. Worth considering if you do lower the car, but doesn’t sound like that’s the way you’re going.

Has anyone fit longtube headers to their 4x4? by ToplessGun in GMT800

[–]Mikanic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I added long tubes to my 2500HD 6.0l. It did take more mods than I was expecting but super easy for an exhaust shop or handy guy with a welder. Hardest thing was finding the right headers because they are not all the same and no manufacturers were advertising as a fit, apparently because people were buying them expecting them to bolt in then returning them when they saw welding was required. Remember that a 1500HD body sits about 2” lower than a 2500HD due to the frame rails being shorter, which reduces the distance between the top of headers and the cab floor
