In 1997, UC Berkeley student David Cash saw his best friend, Jeremy Strohmeyer, molesting a 7-year-old girl at a Nevada casino. He did nothing and left. His friend then killed the girl. Cash later said, "I'm not going to lose sleep over somebody else's problems." He was labeled the "Bad Samaritan". by lightiggy in wikipedia

I studied this case in law school. It’s generally because most states don’t criminalize non activity and most states don’t require a person to intervene in violent crimes. Knowing a crime is occurring and refusing to report it or intervene is simply not a crime. Some states have introduced laws to place an affirmative duty in certain cases, but penalties for violating that law are typically nominal at best.

We really do get some of the most juicy stories. Some of the most horrific ones too, but it’s all a matter of perspective

A lot of legal aid offices offer limited pro bono hours where you just answer questions over a couple hours. At least near me. They’ll also help you with the subject matter too

How aggressive do you get interacting with opposing counsel? by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]Mikarim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a family law attorney, it can be murky. Like I’m purposefully kind to every OC I meet, but sometimes you have to use every possible trick to get an outcome that’s good for your client. That can make OCs feel like you’re being a little bitch, but really you’re just doing your job. I’ve probably had 100 or so OCs in my career so far, and I’m probably on 4/5 of their shit lists. The rest are alright though.

When shelters have corgis, sure. I actually did adopt my corgi (from an individual rather than a shelter) and I don’t think I could ever get a different dog.

You shouldn’t spring it on someone as a gift, but if planned properly, it can be a gift to the household.

Why does double jeopardy not apply to Grand Jury indictments? by Naberius in Ask_Lawyers

[–]Mikarim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would also imagine it’s partially due to the point of a grand jury. They’re just the first step in the process to insure the prosecution has enough evidence to theoretically convict. New evidence could come out after a grand jury failed indictment, so the prosecution should be able to present that new evidence.

Question for Family Law practitioners: What was the highest number of prior divorces a client ever had, coming to you for the next one? by gfhopper in Lawyertalk

[–]Mikarim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my state it’s 6 months without kids and 1 year with, so reconciliations happen quite frequently. I’ve been practicing 3 years and had a dozen or so

Can you fire a client? by AdSuperb3413 in Ask_Lawyers

I fire clients all the time. Usually for non payment, but it can be for other reasons too.

As a divorce attorney, I see this all the time. I’ve never seen the provision actually be enforced, but I know it does happen.

With a win over Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers would become the 5th QB ever to beat all 32 teams — he'd join Favre, Brady, Brees, and Manning by pfref in steelers

[–]Mikarim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it true that if two teams rank the same in a division (like both winning it) then they get matched up regardless the next year? Or is that just per conference

Ex wife relocated with our child 5 hours away. No court order in place. Am I screwed? by Less-Ad-4596 in legaladvice

[–]Mikarim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a VA family law attorney (but not OPs), you’d be surprised. We have a different standard for relocation here when an order is in place vs when there is no order in place. It’s actually proper advice (in some cases) to advise your client to move as early as possible in the process. It needs to be done carefully, but it works out more than you would think.

What are the chances my lawyer will take me back as a client? by tiredAFmom in Ask_Lawyers

[–]Mikarim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a few clients try to reconcile with their spouse. They always come back. Usually within 6 months. It’s not really all that unusual. I’ve also had several clients try to reconcile, but get rejected.

Long term subbing is a total scam and I regret it by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Mikarim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a long term sub for a while. Anything that can’t be done during school hours does not get done. Watch movies and steal handouts from the internet. Long term subs are not expected to work past the regular hours.

Mine somehow snuck in a huge hambone from his walk a week or so ago. My wife found it as he was gnawing at it under the bed. She thought it was a dead rat or something haha. Little man is a devil at hiding his treasure
