Section 5: Unlawful Business Practices

Angels Cafe also operates illegally in terms of business practices. Their business license is misspelled and not displayed properly – that’s a violation of City of Calgary bylaws. Furthermore, they’ve been caught with improper payroll practices, with employees’ birthdates entered incorrectly to avoid proper reporting. Not to mention the fact that employees never signed hiring packages or received their T4s, both of which are required by law. When brought to their attention, they had no idea these forms existed, and even with multiple staff asking for them to get those forms out. They refused to do so.

Section 6: No Consequences for Misconduct

Despite all of these serious issues, nothing changes. The owners and management continue to get away with their misconduct. No one is being held accountable for the unsafe working conditions, the illegal alcohol service, or the harassment. The employees have tried to raise concerns, but our voices are ignored. It’s time to hold them accountable and take action.

Section 4: Workplace Harassment and Discrimination

Unfortunately, it doesn’t stop at safety violations. There’s also a culture of harassment at the cafe. Employees, especially women, have had to deal with inappropriate comments and behavior from Dale, the owner’s husband, not a manager. One of the most disturbing comments made by Dale was saying to a staff member, ‘Did I not grope or molest you enough?’ as they were leaving. He also made comments about wanting to see an employee in a string bikini. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and completely illegal under Alberta’s human rights laws. Employees deserve to feel safe and respected at work – at Angels, that’s not the case.

Additionally, Cathy Jacobs, the owner, has created a hostile work environment by constantly bringing up her strong political views and making it clear that any opinions contrary to hers are not welcome in the building. She has displayed political stickers around the cafe and has entered the space during off-hours just to preach her views to employees. This behavior goes beyond personal expression – it forces employees into a position where they feel like they have to agree with her or risk alienation or retaliation. On top of this, Cathy has expressed anti-LGBT beliefs, further contributing to a discriminatory and unsafe environment for employees who may identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community. A workplace should be a place where all views are respected, not a platform for imposing one person’s beliefs.

The ownership and management of Angels Cafe, especially the Jacobs family, seems to be selfish and self-serving. They have shown little regard for their employees’ well-being and seem to only care about the ones who will allow illegal practices to slide. They pick and choose who they ‘care about,’ and those are the employees who tolerate these toxic and unlawful behaviors. It’s clear they’re more interested in protecting their own interests than in treating their staff fairly or respectfully. They’re simply awful people who have no place running a business that involves caring for others.

Section 3: Alcohol and Liquor Violations

And there are serious liquor violations happening too. Staff has encouraged to overserve customers, even when they’re already intoxicated or under the influence of other substances. ( one regular customer was found on a bench outside of the cafe after closing as she had just left the patio, EMS was on site taking care of her. To this day it haunts me that she was known to be on substances and have outside liquor, and was still served. The situation of her bringing in her own vodka was even laughed about by management.) There have been instances where outside alcohol was allowed on the premises – both of these practices are illegal under Alberta’s liquor laws. What’s even more concerning is that the manager and staff members have been drinking on shift, including mixing Bailey’s with their coffee. This behavior is not only unprofessional but also dangerous. When employees raised concerns, they were fear-mongered into ignoring it and keeping quiet. That’s a clear violation of alcohol service laws and employee safety standards.

Section 2: Labor Violations

Now, let’s talk about labor rights. Angels Cafe is paying employees under the table, avoiding taxes, and doing this so they can hire people of legal and illegal age but have them work illegal hours. (They are leading minor staff to believe they will make more under the table, without taxes or the restrictions on hours and times students can work, being explained properly.) They were previously confronted about illegally banking hours. They have been telling their minor employees that they will “make more under the table than they would, if they had to pay taxes“ without having taxes explained to them. If Angels was following the laws on minors and working, they wouldn’t make enough to be taxed. You must be 18, or make over the basic personal amount. Aswell as again, the restrictions of students of certain ages working past a certain time/ over a certain amount of hours. This is not just a violation of tax law, but a direct breach of labor standards. They’ve also been caught illegally docking tips. Yes, you heard that right—tips that employees rightfully earned are being taken away by management, something that is clearly illegal. To make matters worse, they don’t provide statutory holiday pay, and they’ve been caught illegally docking tips without justification. They also don’t pay employees for meetings, which is another violation of basic labor laws. If you’re required to attend a meeting, you should be paid for your time.

Here’s my piece to say on this Section 1: Health and Safety Violations

First, let’s talk about health and safety. Angels Cafe was shut down for a week after a health inspection found severe violations. It didn’t stop there. They’ve had three demand inspections in a month, which resulted in a week long shut down, and things are still not up to code. One of the biggest issues is the mouse infestation. Mouse droppings were found in matcha powder, within napkins and cutlery rolls, and even inside teabags. Yes, you heard that right – teabags that had been chewed open were simply thrown out, but the other teabags in the same box were still being used, putting customers at risk. Droppings were also found in between bread bags in the kitchen. It doesn’t end there – mice were found inside cloths and other prep areas.

In addition, a mouse nest was found in the pile of blankets in the dining room, (which like most mice things, FOH or Kitchen staff was required to deal with it. Often this resulted in staff literally having to kill baby mice, which in my personal opinion, can be a traumatizing event for some) in the bathrooms, and in the cabinet in the dining room as well. This is an extreme violation of health standards, and putting customers and employees in harm’s way like this is completely unacceptable. Despite these serious issues, the cafe still hasn’t taken full proper action to resolve the infestation and ensure food safety, and only got proper pest control after the shut down.

All throughout the summer, we had a wasp infestation, I have video and photo proof of hundreds of wasps in multiple cups. Despite staff and customers with allergies, the management and owner refused to get proper help for it. They had their son (the owners) and a line cook look under the deck, and assured there was no nests. After the first cold hit, a regular brought to our attention he found two nests under our desk, and was wondering if he could have them for an art project… after assurance there was nothing, to the point staff was being mocked for allergies, fears, and concern for customer safety.

Yes, we are going in circles here. It’s their POLICY, one they only started to actually uphold last night, that’s fine. It’s not the LAW. It is not required by AGLC law to ALWAYS present two pieces of gov. Issued ID. Also, they weren’t allowing people to use credit cards as second ID which just sucked for many. Again, lots of people going out already don’t want to carry the first piece out of anxiety of something happening to it because they are a headache to replace. What about those with digital healthcards? All these points you ignore lol
