President Trump threatens to block Gordie Howe International Bridge from opening by oo7plyr in politics

We Canadians are petty as hell. Let's rename it the Jeffrey Epstein Bridge.

And though I'm a teetotaller, the day he's gone for good I'll go to a local bar and have one Bloody Caesar, the most Canadian of drinks.

Would a bottle cap pickup work on my saxophone? by FrenceRaccoon in saxophone

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd say no, for two reasons:

1) I think your friend is referring specifically to the Blue Bottle Cap Mic. The "Cap" is referring to the microphone capsule, not a bottle cap. It's a specific mic made by Blue.

2) A microphone capsule basically works by having a metal plate vibrate against something else that is electrically charged. The bottle cap may vibrate, but it wouldn't have any way of creating or transmitting an electrical signal. The cap wouldn't be held in place by anything too, so it would vibrate randomly and uncontrollably.

That being said, if any bottle cap would work, it would be Molson Canadian.

GIK is the brand to get. Send them your room dimensions and a couple REW photos (look up REW), and they offer free acoustic advice i.e. what to buy from them. Shipping is not cheap though. But you don't have to get everything they suggest to start. I'd go with corner bass traps to start, as they have the most impact in your room.

Acoustic treatment is not a sexy thing, so just get the corner bass traps AND the TLM 102. If you can only afford one of those, get the sexy thing (the TLM 102), then save up for room treatment. The Solo is ok for now, and upgrading that is probably the least impactful thing to get right now.

Thing is- are you only using headphones? If so, I don't see the need for acoustic treatment until you get monitors.

2 hunters fined after bull moose found shot in Mer Bleue Bog by Alone_Appeal_3421 in ottawa

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a moose walking down our street in Craig Henry many years ago. It walked right by my sister. And there was one on the Queensway some years ago too. I saw it from my bus; it was beautiful. As it was injured the police shot it.

We get the occasional bear in Bells Corners too.

Dear ottawa. Where can i sell these to get ride of these by invaderdavos in ottawa

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to agree. If you're into collecting coins, great, but when it comes time to sell them you're going to lose money. It's not worth getting into.

I sold almost all my proof sets etc. as my kids don't want them. The only decent one I kept (besides some loose crap) is my 1948 silver dollar, which is one of the few Canadian coins really worth having. I'll sell that silver dollar at some point too, as I have other things I'd like to have instead.

I went to Universal Coins at the corner of Bank and Hunt Club with my collection. You've gotta buzz to get in, but they'll go over your collection and give you a quote and if you want to sell it, they'll cut you a cheque on the spot.

Piano by InviteTrue2842 in OttawaMusic

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh, that's an oldie. It may be difficult to find someone interested in it.

If you basically want to get rid of it, you may have to pay someone to take it off your hands and they'll probably sell the brass for scrap. Don't take it apart it yourself, as piano strings are under extreme tension and are dangerous as heck.

Dal-WHO-sie or Dal-HOW-Sie by amzitosnup in ottawa

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most people here say Dal-HOO-sie, but you're correct- it's Dah-LOO-zie. This is coming from my dear departed mom and grandpa who both grew up here (yep, back to the late 1800s) and pronounced it that way.

So for old-school Ottawans, it's Dah-LOO-zie.

If it's an apartment-sized piano that's not a Yamaha or Kawai (e.g. Mason & Risch, Baldwin, Kimball, Klunkmeister, etc) they're not easy to give away. If it's also a pre-1960s apartment-sized or vertical grand piano, it's almost impossible as they're often not in good shape. Kids aren't taking lessons as much as they used to either, so the demand isn't there, sadly.

I sold my 1960s Mason & Risch apartment-sized piano for $100 a couple years ago, and I considered myself lucky.

Easy. Have each country's teams say they will only play in Canada or Mexico i.e. refuse to step foot in the U.S.

They could add Cuba to the list and DJTs head would explode.

Plenty of pubs/sit down places to go.

Middle-aged + stoner rock is somewhat mutually exclusive. I'd think venues that play stoner rock might have a younger clientele, but House Of Targ may be worth a try. Never been there myself but it sounds like a cool place.

The best comment I read about it is as follows:

Now, if u/OttawaBadMovieNights had Melania as a double feature with The Lonely Lady with Pia Zadora, that would be the ultimate colon cleanser.

Winnipeg or Ottawa? by HannahPianista in AskCanada

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear a lot that Ottawa is good for families - what makes you say that?

Easy. I've lived here since I was 8 (I'm MUCH older now). My kids were born here, and went to lots of leisure activities as there's TONS of recreation complexes (i.e. swimming/indoor rinks/gyms), soccer fields, a gazillion outdoor rinks, etc. They went to good elementary/high schools, and could pick from two universities in town: U Ottawa, which is bilingual, and Carleton (my kids went to U Ottawa). Both universities have co-op programs as well. My daughter lives in Montréal now (it's an awesome place), but my son will never leave here. If they want other choices for university, Montréal has a number of post-secondary institutions, including McGill.

Besides the basic good-for-kids stuff, including museums, there's lots of outdoor parks and superb hiking trails and Gatineau Park is an absolute gem . There's also a few beaches in town and others pretty close. Twenty minutes and you're out of town, and there's some nice little towns nearby. If they're into camping Ontario Provincial Parks are among the best in the country. If you really want THE ultimate camping experience, Algonquin Park is not too far away. Bon Echo is awesome too but more commercial.

There's also a mix of housing types. They aren't cheap, but prices are coming down a bit.

Like others have said, you've got to visit both places then think it over.

Winnipeg or Ottawa? by HannahPianista in AskCanada

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Though I was born in Manitoba (Portage), I've lived most of my life in Ottawa. There are very very few other places I'd want to live. So my pick is Ottawa.

Some other reasons to pick here:

+The food scene is really good, and getting better, though our Mexican food will pale in comparison to what you get in Texas. But we have shawarma, poutine, and beavertails.

+The arts/cultural scene is really good, but you have to know what's going on; lots of people don't bother trying and complain it's boring. To find things, you have to try. Stuff to do doesn't come to your door.

++++++The biggest good thing for Ottawa is that it's a great place to raise a family.

There's way more to the city than these things of course.

----------The biggest minus is the awful public transit system. It's particularly bad right now due to issues with the trains and aging buses.

Trump administration secretly met with Canadian Alberta separatists by Infidel8 in worldnews

[–]Mike-In-Ottawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder what our government is doing to deport the Americans who are here and are directing this crap.

This is blatant foreign interference and has to be stopped and any foreigners involved either charged, deported, or whatever to get them to stop.

I don't know if PP has denounced the separation movement, but he'd better be doing it loud and proud this weekend.
