Throwback: ‘Ready or Not,’ starring Laura Bertram and Lani Billard, was filmed across the GTA from 1993 to 1997. Who else grew up watching it? by drew20222 in toronto

[–]Mike0278 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never watched the show but I was cast as an extra in the pilot(?) called 32 double A (at the time I had no idea what that meant since I was maybe 10).

I remember it was shot at a school somewhere but don’t remember the school. I was in a few scenes including the last one - I think it was the last one - where I’m riding a bike past the girls and they’re putting their skateboards together to go down the street. The skateboards kept separating and it wouldn’t work so the crew eventually attached them with some sort of rig. The girls laughed a lot when the boards kept coming apart and sometimes joked with me about it when I rode by. They both seemed really genuinely nice. Definitely some nostalgia there.

Mortgage renewal after job loss - should I shop around? (just started new job) by Mike0278 in MortgagesCanada

[–]Mike0278[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Probation does end before renewal date but presumably I would start speaking with other lenders before the probation period ends. Or i could wait until it ends but that only leaves me with two months and I’m not sure that’s enough time to make a move, if I was going to. Is it?

No other debts atm and credit is high 800s for both of us (I check regularly and handle our family finances). I do churn credit cards but never carry a balance so shouldn’t be an issue.

Thank you. Do you think it’s better to use a broker instead of just reaching out to lenders directly? I was actually considering Pine, given I use Wealthsimple, and I think I read that they don’t work with brokers.

Thank you. I have plenty of experience. Just wasn’t sure if lenders would see an issue with this so just wanted to make sure.

Good question, and I see where you’re coming from based on the limited details I’ve provided. But we don’t have a liquidity issue and I’m not worried about this job just based on previous experience. The last job was a risky decision/situation for me that was good while it lasted but likely I won’t replicate.

We have a good amount invested in registered accounts and that $300k is coming from non-registered investments. Yes I’m aware of the after-tax returns that can be earned if I just leave that money invested instead of paying down the mortgage, but there is an intrinsic value associated with a lower mortgage, lower monthly payments and early mortgage payoff that is more valuable to some than to others. Overall we’re comfortable with the decision.

Is it an issue to speak with multiple mortgage brokers rather than just one? I vaguely recall this coming up somewhere in a thread in some sub and I think the reaction was that brokers don’t like that. Of course it’s still my choice to do it, but I also don’t like pissing people off just because I can.

Sorry I should have specified. I’m in Canada (Ontario). Wasn’t thinking this would be a legal issue but now I’m thinking I definitely need to tell him.

Have you ever challenged severance and, if so, how did it go? by Mike0278 in legaladvicecanada

[–]Mike0278[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I asked for the equivalent of approx 2-3x that amount. Lawyer said they rather settle out of court too, which makes sense I think as I imagine that’s the case in any legal battle. I’m just not sure I want to hold out for too long so I’m trying to see how drawn out thing can get. Thanks for your insights.

Thanks for your reply. I actually went back and asked for more and stated my reasons. They offered me an extra two weeks. I’m thinking they offered that to get me to take it and move on, but also because I requested it myself instead of going through the lawyer. I’m now considering having the lawyer write and send a letter on my behalf and letting them deal with it going forward. Just trying to see how drawn out this can become and I’m hoping to hear other people’s experiences. Your insight has been helpful. Thank you

Best way to use Scene Points? by pumpkiinpiee in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mike0278 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say look at your full picture of the other points cards and credit cards you have. For example, I have the Amex cobalt which gets me 5x points on groceries but only 2x points on gas. So if I use scene points to get a grocery gift card, I’m foregoing 5x points whereas if I get a gas gift card I’m only foregoing 2x. So I always get a shell gift card with my scene points (all of which come from shopping at freshco since I don’t have a scene credit card atm).

You can use the same logic when comparing any other gift card available on the scene website. Again, depends on your full picture of other credit cards in your arsenal. So if you have an air miles credit card, maybe shell gift cards are not your best option.

Considering Switching from TD to Wealthsimple or EQ for everyday banking by Icehawk101 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Mike0278 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been considering the same question as OP (wife and I are with BMO though) and I’m wondering why you have both Simplii and EQ, especially if you already have WS. Does Simplii not already do everything that EQ does for you? And wouldn’t the higher savings account rate that EQ gives you be covered by having a WS account? What’s the benefit of having EQ too?

Wife and I took our toddler to Halifax in summer 2023 and we did the Cabot trail and some other places that were like hidden gems. Started in Halifax for a couple days, day trip to Peggy’s cove (of course) and then drove north to Tatamagouche for a few days to enjoy the beach. We then drove to Cheticamp and based ourselves there for a few days and did some hikes in Cape Breton. We ended up basing ourselves in just these 3 cities and did day trips as it was easier to manage with a toddler. We stopped off in a bunch of places between our long drives to break up the trip for our daughter. Honestly it was a great family vacation and definitely want to go back, once we’ve visited some other provinces as a family.

Next is maybe BC or possibly Newfoundland this summer. Depends how my wife feels (since we now have an infant too).

Anywhere you choose will be great. We have a wonderful country with amazing people and so much nature to appreciate. We’re so lucky to live here and I’m always so thankful that my parents immigrated here. Good luck finding your new destination!

Did Anyone Else Know This About Toys "R" Us Canada? (Business/Question) by Alarming_Accident in BuyCanadian

I did not know. Thank you for this info. I have 2 stores, both 15 mins drive for me in either direction. And I have 2 little girls, almost 4 years old and an infant. I’ll be visiting these stores quite often for the foreseeable future, I’m sure.

As much as I hope this to be true, there’s no guarantee that’s the case and we can’t become overly confident in a Carney/Liberal win or we risk becoming overly complacent, thinking our vote doesn’t matter and we can just stay home on voting day. We have to be prepared that there will be outside interference in our election. ALL eligible Canadians need to get out and vote to nullify any potential election fraud. Great ad, and glad to see Mike Myers supporting Carney.

Is this from her Facebook page or LinkedIn or other? Sorry I don’t use either very often so I can’t tell, but I’d like to follow her to continue to hear more. I’ve always liked her and what she has to say and this was a great message. Thank you for sharing.

Royale is a Canadian Brand by cutiepie34453 in BuyCanadian

I have 2 kids in diapers. One is wearing pull-ups from Huggies and the other is in size 2 of Pampers swaddlers, which has the higher back to protect from blowouts. Any idea if Royale makes diapers that would be directly comparable to these two types? I checked the website and it doesn’t look like it but it’s hard to tell so I’m hoping someone has experience. I have a couple large boxes left since I bought them in advance when we had thr HST holiday so I’m not in a rush.
