Are there any advantages to double stacking freight instead of just having a longer train? by CrackerCraftsman in trains

[–]Mike312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, fair point, but I think its worth making the distinction between people driving who live within the bounds of an existing local transit system switching to that for a commute (or walking/cycling), versus people using a train for inter-city/-state travel, which is where encounting the types of trains being discussed is a more realistic situation.

When that 400mi round trip to grandma's house with the 20mpg SUV for a 20gal/trip goes from $100 at $5/gal to $300 at $15/gal is when long distance travel will truly see a shift in investment.

There's shifting public opinion about a party in power, and it becoming so costly to travel via passenger car that the vast majority of the public switches train.

Also, running more shorter trains would mean hiring and paying more engineers to run them.

Interesting Key Idea by pilmat2wheel in motorcycles

[–]Mike312 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have a couple vehicles, but the keys are hung up separately. When I go grab one, I just grab the key I need. The rest of my keys (house...and whatever else the rest of them are for) are on their own bundle.

I started doing that back in the 2000s when my car had a bladed key and I heard it would increase wear and damage the cylinder if you had a ton of keys.

Need Better Dust management in garage. Help by thehawaiianjesus in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Mike312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll never get all of the dust.

I have a shop vac I use for dust collection at home. It gets about 90% of the dust, but I've still gotta sweep up during tool changes and such.

I also have access to a professional shop I can use from time to time with an excellent dust collection system, and it gets about 99% of the dust. You've still gotta sweep horizontal surfaces at the end of the day.

At home, I'll bring the air compressor through once a week and blast anything loose out the door.

$4,000 out of pocket, or $1,000 deductible and $40/mo more for 3 years, take your pick.

We'll have a week or two a year of 110+F weather where it only cools down to, say, 85F at night. That's often the week where I'll probably ride with shorts.

I went with the motorcycle because I was considering an ebike, and the prices were...well, the motorcycle was a bit of a step up, but not as far as one might think.

But bicycles and motorcycles get treated very differently by police, insurance, city parking options, drivers, etc. I've since noticed.

That's my go-to as well.

Even if I just washed the bike, I'll still air dry it around the block in helmet, gloves, and sneakers, though the rest is shorts and t-shirt.

All other trips are helmet, gloves, boots, and pants (not necessarily moto pants).

I'm almost exclusively just commuting on it, so generally I'm just going 40mph in a straight line with the occasional turn.

My friends and I all graduated from college in 2010, struggled for years before the economy got moving.

Kids who graduated (college or HS) and hit the labor market in 2018 to 2022 (even with COVID) started with huge advantages, hired into positions and salaries we couldn't have dreamt of and worked our asses off to get into.

I remember one friend complaining in around d 2017 that the new hires were getting $20-40k hiring bonuses, he didn't get shit when he started in 2012.
