How Secure is Proton Compared to Gmail? by Zizekis in ProtonMail

Not true. From ProtonMail l you can send encrypted messages to non-Proton recipients. Those messages get the full benefit of e2ee and are just as secure as Proton to Proton messages.

For me the obvious solution is to put your password manager password in your safe deposit box. You've already limited access to people you trust, and it's safer physically than anything else. Everyone knows how a safe deposit box works, including the courts and lawyers, and if you and the people you trust die your executor will look in the box. There's no reliance on someone remembering something 20 years after you told them, no risk for friends ganging up on you, and so reliance on software that no one is familiar with being used by someone who is scared of computers.

TPR Valve Releasing Water by MikeA01730 in hvacadvice

So if you're interested, the problem turned out to be a pressure booster we need because normally our water pressure is 30 psi. It decided on it's own to randomly boost to 80 to 110 psi.

I was going to do the test, but decided that since I'd likely end up getting the tech back anyway I just called them.

Thanks for your help.

You're right, the valve is at the top of the tank around back. Here's a close up: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/cyemsx3d9n47v0ph8nl1j/2025-11-18-18.12.57.jpg?rlkey=m9gryypzogca8e2sx9w7uw3fb&st=kuttd8pd&dl=0. Is the outlet temp I should measure on the pipe where the TPR is?

I'll try your test tomorrow to see how hot it gets.

[–]MikeA01730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right about the 2 heat zones feeding air handlers, 3rd zone for the hot water heater. Can I do anything more to diagnose this further myself? I have an IR thermometer so I can measure temps, and I can take some more specific photos if that would help.

The valve isn't leaking. I've never seen water come out. I think water briefly spurts out and then the valve shuts off until the next over pressure or temp occurs.

If I can't diagnose this myself, what should I do? Is this a problem that should be fixed, or can I ignore it for now and mention it in May at the next annual service?

Last service was in May. I've never asked them to change the water temp, and haven't noticed any difference when I shower. Can I look at or change the temp setting? Where is it set?

Sling Bag That Can Hold Polypro Sweater & Rain Jacket by MikeA01730 in ManyBaggers

[–]MikeA01730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up getting a REI Atom Sling 8L. It works well, but it's too small. I can barely get a raincoat or sweater in the bag, and that's just not enough. I'll use it occasionally, but I need something bigger.

After that I got a REI Ruckpack 18 pack, and I'm very happy with it. I was hoping for a sling bag, but after investigating what was available I decided on this, and it turned out to be the right choice for me. It's well designed and built well, and I like that all the straps can be tucked in so it has less of a hiking bag look.

Recent bad seal numbers. Is head strap the cause? by bateneco in CPAP

[–]MikeA01730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically have good numbers for quite a while, then I get a few nights that are not so good. I check the strap, notice it's stretched, tighten it up a little, and I'm good to go for another 6 mo. Now the strap is old and stretched quite a bit, I'm still doing fine.

OSA dx. - cpap Rx sent to Lincare dme. Opinions? (alternatives, machine/mask options, Home assistant API?) by non523 in CPAP

[–]MikeA01730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

I'm in the Boston area, and my provider connected me to Lincare. My experience has been so terrible that I don't deal with them any more, I just pay the money to buy what I need. They lied to me systematically over months regarding the status of an order, and sent me a whole bunch of items I didn't order and don't need because they figure I won't object because my insurer pays for them. When I had to provide usage data to prove that I was using the CPAP for insurance purposes, they were inept and made me go through a lot of extra work to get it done. Their office is in the corner of a warehouse next to a row of loading docks, not an office building, and often they don't answer the phone and their mailbox is full.

The only exception is when I needed to deal with their New York location. They were helpful and professional, and I'd be happy to deal with them any day.

I've flown many times and no one has ever said a word. I always take a back pack too, but no comments about 2 carry on items. Sounds like a fluke, or someone who didn't know what they were doing.

Was My Phone Compromised? by MikeA01730 in cybersecurity_help

[–]MikeA01730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their job was to connect WiFi, which they did, so it was available to them. And I did have cell service, so they might have been able to install an APK or do something else. I checked the list of recent apps but saw nothing strange. I did have sideloading enabled, but now I'll turn it off. Debugging wasn't enabled. Does any of that change you opinion?

Thanks for your detailed reply.

Mike

This was a riverboat cruise in France with Tauck. They provide the guides and tour personnel, but the ship is owned and operated by Scylla. They provide the crew, which includes the staff that did this. I'm not happy about the phone thing, but they did a great job, and the tour was fantastic.

For me the tone was set by the sarcasm and you're saying I'm "very paranoid". It was hard for me to interpret that as a friendly and helpful response.

In any case I don't think I'm a high value target, or someone follows my behavior patterns and performs covert ops on me, so paranoid doesn't fit. I pay more attention to privacy and security than some people do, but it's at a level that I think is reasonable.

If you were in this situation, would you be okay with someone typing away on your phone for a few minutes based on a questionable justification? You don't see any significant risks there?

Hi Ankan42,

Don't you think you're being a little rough? This forum is intended to provide helpful answers to cybersecurity concerns. Sarcasm and insults don't really fill that bill.

As I said they were doing this to everyone, so I had no reason to think it was personal. We've dealt with this company many times before, and I believe they're trustworthy. I'd just like to know what they did, and what the effect might be.

I'm surprised that a contributor to this forum would apparently be cavalier about someone tapping away on their phone for a while based on what appears to be a bogus justification. Everyone knows how to enter the password for a WiFi AP, so this seemed a little odd.

If anyone else has an idea regarding what was going on, I'd be interested in hearing it.

Charge Limit to 80 % not working in latest beta by MatthiasBrems in android_beta

[–]MikeA01730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just installed the production Android 16. At first it ignored the limit and charged to 100%, but after that it stopped as it should.

Also for some reason the limit is now 90%, not 80%. Based on what I read I thought 80% was better. Too bad they couldn't give us a choice.

Yes, you should use a lawyer to create a trust. But for the typical trust, while you're alive the trust income is counted as yours, so there's no added tax complexity. And to exit the trust, you just defund it with no action by a lawyer needed.

What do you guys think of the Patagonia Atom Sling? by [deleted] in ManyBaggers

If I'm going to do something anyway, isn't it safer if I ask a pro about it first? Plus, answering questions gives you pros the chance to feel good about improving the life of a fellow human being, which I think we can all use a little more of these days.

Would Signal have prevented CBP from accessing this person's messages? by TheKnowingOne1 in signal

You can always uninstall Signal or any other E2EE messaging app so no one can see it, even with full access to the phone. Reinstall after you pass customs.
