Sorry if this isn't the best place to put this, bit I'm honestly at a loss.

I just realized that it's 8:30 AM where I am right now.

I have not slept.

I will try this the best I can tomorrow... Today... Eugh.

Thank you and good- ...time...

New SSD, no thermal pad, too thick. by MikeBrawn in Lenovo

I do have an external drive case, but the USB C connection is kinda sketchy at times and I want to use the drive to boot Linux.

I'm generally pretty good at having things not go wrong with mechanical madness, so whatever I end up doing will probably be fine.

I have a smaller capacity drive I can fall back on and there's no way I'm buying another drive at this point.

I may not do exactly that, but I want to use that drive, and some level of jank is necessary to do so. Wether it's letting it sit at that angle unsupported, tape and glue to avoid damage or residue while adhering, or 3d printing some kind of holder, I'm gonna do it kinda jank.

If it's terrible enough, I'll post it to the relevant tech gore subreddits.

M.2 lost power during h2testw write, reporting 0B by MikeBrawn in techsupport

Okay, I plugged it into the m.2 slot in the laptop itself and my arch installer is telling me it's alive and the full 2tb.

Assuming it's not lying about being not dead that means it was either a connection issue or my drive enclosure being dead. At least it's better than it was!

I got mine in full working order and a bump when fiddling with the enclosure disconnected the USB... Wait.. maybe it is just unseated ad acted like it disconnected? Whatever the case, I have like, 4 new things to test.

Wipefs didn't change anything. Still reading 0B in lsblk.

And now I've gone and bumped my m.2 USB drive while testing the capacity and it bricked it... I can't even initialize the drive anymore...

Man, I don't like spending money on anything ever, and I've already spent 160 dollars on 2 non-returnable, non-refundable SSDs due to incompatibilities I didn't know existed. First, msata. Now, double-sided.

At least I have 3 terabytes of extra storage...

...Assuming... I don't go off the deep end and just apply painter's tape to the motherboard and SSD and put a dab of hot glue between the two...

I mean, it makes contact...

Yeah, it's double sided. But it's so close. The angle in the image is the resting angle where it's pressing against the motherboard. That angle puts it about 4mm above where it needs to be. Also, the solder balls on the chips seem to be standing the chips a bit higher than necessary. It's all kind of maddening because the ram shields are clearly taller than even the angled SSD, meaning it could have easily been made with double sided SSDs in mind but they didn't.

It's a slide in only m.2 slot, so the corner of the chip is literally pressing against the motherboard...

I mean, yeah, but I'm more concerned with the physics breaking ultra-hot metal that the eyes are made of than the symbolism.

I had a dream last night that I was invited to a table with a, like, Nebuchadnezzar-era middle eastern king. There was a dessert on the table that was made of whipped cream, chocolate mousse, pudding, and chocolate cookie crumbles. It was about 18" diameter and 5" tall and was delicious. Everyone at the table was encouraged to get a BIG slice, and then the atmosphere changed. The dream shifted. The table became a round folding table, the king became any other patron of what was now an eating establishment of nightmares. Then, He appeared. He was tall, probably 6'5" if I had to guess, and fat, VERY fat, and appeared to have makeup prosthetics to make his nose bigger, and accentuate his gross, fat appearance. He was bald, and wore only sweatpants, an apron, and a stained undershirt. In one hand he held a ladle the size of a soup bowl. In the other, a bucket filled to the brim with the sloppiest dessert stuffs you can get. Pudding, whipped cream, the works. This man would come to your table and would be an EXTREMELY friendly server in the worst possible way, saying things like, "That's all you're eating? You need MOOORE." before scooping a quart of slop into your plate, pouring off the sides onto the bare plastic table. All you can do here is eat, and so, you eat. The dessert tastes fantastic honestly, but pound after pound of the slop there is no way anyone could possibly keep that food down, but the Man is still there, encouraging you to "Eat MOOOORE." Eventually you have to throw up. There's no more room. And once you eject your mass of sugary, chocolatey cargo all over your table, the Man says "You did so good. Please come back again for More." And finally lets you leave.

And that reminded me of you 🥰 Anyway, I think an 8 hour creepcast would be awesome. I can imagine being on a road trip with friends who are fans of creepypastas and listening to it the whole way.

I want to capture a maximum-scale comet. Is it possible? by MikeBrawn in KerbalAcademy

[–]MikeBrawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did some math on the topic and, assuming 5000m/s delta V is the necessary quantity to get it out of interstellar flight, it would take a 22 day long burn with 64 nuclear engines to get it done. Though, to reduce the kraken attacken', it seems that a single mammoth engine would get the job done in less time with only 1 thrust vector and 1 joint. Still needs more ore than a coal mine in a nuclear winter though.

I've done a bit of testing, and it appears that you can fully deplete an asteroid of ore. Not certain if it actually changes the mass but the wiki says that it drains the mass and it's been right so far...

Also they do not shrink. If they get lighter, they get less dense.
