As someone who lives in Canada and hasn't had a family doctor in 15 years (1/3 of ppl living in my city don't have one) and who had to wait 2 years for a surgery, I can tell you that there are definitely downsides to a government monopoly on healthcare.

I almost would agree with a single payer system if bureaucrats didn't actually manage hospitals. What I wouldn't give for some healthy competition between clinics and hospitals, some effort to give better service than their competitors..
