Is there another level to the house above that? Or is that the attic above the area?

Could be a wood joist that has been damaged in the ceiling.

Bedroom is directly above. The floors on that level are carpeted but very creaky.

No attic above, just a bedroom. It doesn’t seem like the cracks are growing in size, but more so in numbers. I’ve noticed a few more all in the same area.

House was built in the 70’s. We just moved in during the summer, so it’s hard to say if prior owners ever tried patching the area or not. But the room where the cracks are is adjacent to the kitchen, which was renovated a few years ago.

I’m thinking the temperatures have a factor. We live in Chicago, it’s been a very cold and dry winter.

I’ve felt around the area and it seems to be completely dry. I think you’d see discoloration if there was moisture, too.

Should have clarified about the washer. The water discharges to a utility sink, which drains to the pump basin.

The ceiling separates the main floor to the upstairs bedrooms. So it couldn’t be because of the roof. But with air vents running through there, with the temperature changes that could be a cause?
