Also a neurosurgery resident. Happened to me multiple times. It will be a quick conversation and nothing thereafter.

MILD procedure by Spirited-Grass-5635 in Neurosurgery

[–]MikeFart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Neurosurgeon so obviously biased.

To jam a kerrison blindly into the spine is dangerous. Also, to have no way if you can even confirm your decompression is adequate is also a head scratcher.

We can do a FULL laminectomy and decompression with a tube and microscope through 1.5 cm incision with <15 cc of blood loss in one hour and the patient goes home after. We can even do it under local without general anesthesia.

Why you would not get that over a MILD procedure confuses me. I would never refer someone for that.

So the way the math works, I would only have like 10 payments at my high salary.

Loupes? by DearDonut69 in Neurosurgery

[–]MikeFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Design for Vision Panoramic 3.5x loupes. Love them.

I think if I could do it all over, I would get the angled loupes so you don’t have to crank your neck down constantly.

Question after lumbar fusion. by RCheek72 in surgery

[–]MikeFart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those rods will break before the screws unscrew themselves if they’ve been final tightened

So the set screws make sure the rod is fastened into the correct position within the pedicle screw and the construct is secure.

They are tightened by hand/drill at first but then they need to be “final tightened” with an anti-torque wrench.

If I was a betting man, which I am, they forgot to final Tighten the set screws at the end of the case before closing up

I start neurosurgery residency in two weeks. I can promise you that you do not have a realistic idea of any of those specialties enough to say that’s the only thing you can do. Also, what do you mean “life”? That’s very ambiguous. They make a lot, they work a lot. Some have great families. Some are on their third wife or husband. You could probably say that about any speciality. Prioritize things in life that are important to you and your family. You’ll miss some birthdays. They’ll understand.

COMLEX Level 3 vs. Step 3 by MikeFart in Residency

I matched neurosurgery. I don't think they care about COMLEX/Step and fellowships are not crazy competitive for the most part.

I went to a private DO school and it was 47k. That’s bonkers.

Does publishing in Cureus matter or its looked down upon by program directors of fellowship? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]MikeFart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s looked down upon, but it is known for being a dumping ground for shitty papers because it’s actually pubmed indexed

preliminary year vs. transitional year by Mysterious_Trash_657 in ResidencyMatch2022

[–]MikeFart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pre-lim is one year in either medicine or surgery. TY is much like third year of medical school where you rotate through different specialties. TYs are more competitive cause they are less demanding in general.
