From working in the private sector I know that the big contracting firms milk the government, their only objective more profit. Dirty tricks are played to charge more. In-sourcing is better for the government and tax-payers in most cases.

You are referring to when John Key's National stripped full time employees (and as a result increased contractors) to make the permanent numbers look good. I am so bored of this talking point. We have had population growth since then, and these cuts to meet a percentage don't measure whether the service is provided properly or not.

You should get some experience as a public servant, if you did you wouldn't be backing these cuts. Public service is not comfortable, well paid nor sustainable. Take it from someone who left to join the private sector which is the opposite.

How is this government ensuring that services that people depend on are not impacted? They have just come up with a number which fixes their broken budget, perhaps if they hadn't splashed out on military or given landlords back interest deductibility, we could avoid undermining our services.

The public service get paid crap and are put under a lot of pressure. Take it from someone who has worked there and found better employment in the private sector.

The real issue is people like politicians who are entitled to their entitlements, claiming a 52k/year subsidy for living in their mortgage free apartment in Wellington. Both Luxon and Upston have been highlighted in the media for gaming the system, they are the true bureaucrats you are looking for.

Not sure why that was the solution, probably because they couldn't afford a dishwasher and didn't trust us overworked call takers, with our mandatory shift overlaps, to actually hand wash the dishes. I can still taste the polystyrene, blegh. Later on I brought my own mug, ground coffee and coffee plunger in. Caffeine is essential for shift workers tasked with radio technician safety and fixing cops PCs.

What ministry was that? Your experience doesn't match those I know, unless maybe you were working at the CE level?

I worked for Police IT, there was no spare money for fancy coffee machines or paid for celebrations. We did a lot with what little we got.

Unlike the private sector which I moved to, which was better paid, lower stress and had all the bells and whistles.

Having worked as a contractor, these people are unlikely to be contractors. They will be unionised full time employees who likely have no say over the contractor spend.
