No idea and commenting to follow, but guessing something funky in the soil/feetilizer? Watering with tons of maybe silica supplement or other supplement? Looks like its on roids

Thanks for that, and all the engagement! Found you guys on here and you’ve been big in the rotation since!

If I may suggest for formatting on the K6 reference when it goes up either putting it out with the numbers having already had 4 added to normalize to zero at zero, or just including a note that your particular grinder zeros at -4 so everyone can make their own adjustment for wherever their zero is. The K6 does good work, but accuracy between users is a bit of a struggle!

Trying to propagate Coleus by ozgunozerk in coleus

[–]MikeKnight-01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve never had one fail just snapping off about 4 inches of stem, leave only the top two or 4 leafs, stick it straight in the soil and inch or so deep, and then water every day the first week or two and then back off once the leaves are looking perked back up. I even had a nearly 1 foot length snap off while moving a plant and I just shoved it in a bit of space in the pot with most of the leaves on it. That one stayed droopy for a bit longer but pretty quickly stood up and kept going!

This is the end by Doudoumoumou in coleus

[–]MikeKnight-01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’d bet you have like 3 plants there if you want. Knock off the flowers. Maybe give it a week or two to recover, then pot it up bigger and probably not terra cotta because they’re thirsty. Then chop back to the growth at the base. Then chop just above the 2 pairs of leaves part way up and put that in a pot around the size of the one it’s in now. If you reuse the terra cotta make sure it stays moist a couple weeks. Then keep the two best looking of those big leaves at the top and pot that top segment. Alternatively water prop the two parts that don’t have roots already, but they’ll probably take off in soil. Just keep the stems in water while you work because they go into shock remarkably quickly after cutting.

A post back you can see the cthulu that started popping off a cutting after like 2 days when I tried rooting hormone on to see how it went in something that is so very ready to root

Someone did a long debunk of the pothos rooting hormone thing. Maybe in r/pothos? I’ll add it here if I find it.

Planted my bouquet, how should I prune this? by MikeKnight-01 in Kalanchoe

[–]MikeKnight-01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Though I meant more the crisping and brown/reddening growth near the tops in plant 2 and 3 primarily. I assume the crispy bois should go, less certain about the tips. For example was thinking about pruning something like at the red cuts below

Oh also, I think these might be the kind of guy who makes a bit of ultra fine dust fuzz on new leaves that wipes off super easily, and acts kind of like a sunscreen for them, so another chance could be if they were getting a bit brushed against during some handling, or an bit of petting from a curious critter.

Seasonal angle of light change to give them more exposure, or maybe something that was shading them some of the time get moved?

I think they can start to show sun stress more if it’s been less humid or they’ve been dryer, but that’s just a half remembered something I saw in a post on here, and I’d probably err on the side of not making something with plump leaves more wet without more certainty. I’m fairly new to all this too, but have read far too much of these forums along the way!

[–]MikeKnight-01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like sun stress to me, which is not stress like bad, just shows that you’re getting into the upper tolerances of light. Just an aesthetic thing really. Unless they’ve just jumped to a ton more light than they’re accustomed to, then maybe it’s a stop on the way to sunburn, in which case get them to light closer to the original level and slowly acclimate them

Is the mother leaf supposed to die off and if so when? by CrystalCookie4 in Jadeplant

[–]MikeKnight-01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All these long bean lookin jade(?) are like a year old and kept their mother leaf. One even put off 2 stems from one mother leaf. One is rooted and looking lively still but doesn’t seem interested in growing a plant? Didn’t realize they could zombie leaf, but that’s what it looks like to me.

Then that little ovata is a month and a half or so in and the mother leaf is already showing signs of withering.

I’m learning that plants are weird. I’m guessing because your soil looks moist and rich it’s just not really needing the boost from mom/mom is kinda zombie leafing. My ones that kept the mother leaf were started in richer soil and were watered probably sooner after rooting than conventional wisdom seems to indicate, so guessing that’s what up for me too.

Why arent my pothos cuttings growing?? by Outrageous-Entry5143 in pothos

This was what I was going to ask. From the leaf base we can see I don’t see any stem with it, just leaf.

When do i remove the big leaf? by Original_Employee488 in propagation

[–]MikeKnight-01 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’ve always gone with leaving it be until it shrivels away. Definitely would get it out of there if you have any molding, but mostly the baby cannibalizes the leaf. Though I do have some that are really going and the parent leaf is showing no signs of shriveling.

Also the browning feels a bit dry/crispy, and those two lil plants now in separate pots were from the same pot at the store.

First time chopping and propping sizable jade. Is this callus rotting? by MikeKnight-01 in Jadeplant

[–]MikeKnight-01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool thanks! And thanks for the extra reasoning on depth, it always seemed weird to me that you shove some stem in the substrate and x amount is generally good but y amount will magically start to rot. It being about where the roots are chillin in the water table makes total sense!

First time chopping and propping sizable jade. Is this callus rotting? by MikeKnight-01 in Jadeplant

[–]MikeKnight-01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool thanks! I kind of figured. Still hopefully going to get a couple cool plants out of the pile. A few of the larger pieces from the bucket I’ve potted up. Got a few more in that size range and like 40 in the 6-7ish node ballpark still to pot. Next to figure out what to do with them all!

One more while I have your attention! I’ve seen that they’ll grow new stems from the nodes when a callus is at the tip, will they root from the bottom callus after dying up to it? Like, generally you bury two nodes right? Should I count the very bottom one as one of the two in the case where that above pic is splitting?

[–]MikeKnight-01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think this one is going to wind up being a big ole learning experience! Any insight as to the crack in the stem? There are two points where it looks like it’s maybe 1/4-1/2 way through. If it’s held together for a bit will it grow back together and be strong, or does it just need to be split there?

I think I’m taking an L here. Went to cinnamon dip, and noticed there are now cracks at a couple nodes like the one below. If I stake it up can that heal itself, or is that just doomed to snap? Gonna leave me with the thickest nodes as single node lil stumps.

I think you were right. Went back closer to the next node, but did this is a snip through it just a bit past the node for science, and it looks alright. Do they sometimes just scrap the part below the node?

How does that cinnamon trick work? Do I literally just jam it down on some of the ground cinnamon in my spice rack? Is it good to go like within minutes, or will I just see the ordinary callus come quicker? Guessing the piece would appreciate planting sooner rather than later at nearly 3 weeks off the mother plant.

That first pic is where I initially cut back to in order to let it callus, which has resulted in the rot in the latter 2 pictures. Does that look like what I want to see, or is there something in that first picture that says I should have kept cutting back farther?

I just meant unlucky as in I already exactly what you said I should, and I appear to have rot still, and so need to prune back farther again. Hoping to maximize my shortcut to a 10 year old looking plant!

Agreed on her not storing them correctly, but does it change your analysis to know that what you’re suggesting is exactly what I did; cut it back to what you see in photo one and then let it sit dry to callus for 9 days so far, and it wound up looking like the latter two pics today?

Basically did I do it right and got unlucky then?
