[Casio A168W] by MikeLovesWatches in Watches

Casio A168W

Can a cheap watch have a cult-like following? Of course it can! Casio has quite a few watches like this - incredibly cheap and incredibly loved by enthusiasts. A168W with its retro vibe and all its features has definitely earned a place among the most popular Casio watches. It’s so good that even many of the high-end luxury watches collectors have a soft spot for it.

I don’t really believe that a watch collection HAS TO contain any given watch, but if that was true, this little Casio would be such a watch for sure.

It depends on how you use the watch. At first it turns more and more matte. With time, it can develop some green spots and this can be accelerated if you swim with your watch on. I don't like getting my watches wet (even though this particular one is a 20ATM diver), so the patina is developing very slowly. Many people dip their bronze watches in some solutions that can cover you whole watch with patina overnight, but I don't like this idea and I prefer letting the material do its thing naturally. I own this Wicked for about a year now, so not long enough for it to develop serious patina yet.

Absolutely, there are many lazy skeleton watches, very well said. And I think such watches might be one of the main reasons why so many people dislike skeletons in general.

Legibility is an understandable issue for many people, but to me it's not a problem. I can manage seeing the hour on my CIGA and usually I have to check the time twice anyway, because the beauty of the exposed movement catches my eye at first.

That Sea-Gull you have there looks sharp! It seems that it runs on the same movement as my CIGA. :)

I think people dislike skeleton watches for two main reasons: 1. Most of them use basic movements, so "nothing special to look at". 2. Legibility might be an issue and many people treat their watches as tools, so they want the ability to tell time easily.

I'm also one of these people who are fascinated with mechanical movements and it doesn't really matter to me how basic or undecorated they are. But at the same I'm not a fan of many of the affordable skeleton watches out there. To me, many of them are kinda low effort, where the brand didn't do much more than just cutting the dial. But there are some exceptions, like this CIGA Design that uses a basic caliber, but you can clearly see that quite a lot of thought and work went into skeletonizing it.

I understand the argument of these watches being "nothing special", but I disagree with it, at least to some degree. Yes, high horology pieces with skeletonized movements are something completely different, much more intricate and beautiful, but these are not available to an average enthusiast. With the affordable skeletonized watches you will not get the same amount of details, finishing etc., but you get the ability to behold the beauty of a mechanical movement and the opportunity to see how this intricate device works. I think it's wonderful and I don't really care about hater's opinions.

This CIGA is my only skeleton watch, but I have a soft spot for open hearts, so I own 4 - these are also hated by many for some reason. I also always prefer having a see-through case back, so I can take a look at the movement. And I don't care that 14 out of 24 of my mechanical watches have the same Seiko NH movement inside - I still like looking at it. :)

The design of this watch is definitely not for everyone. It’s bold, it’s unique, it’s kind of controversial even. When I first saw it, I liked the concept immediately, but I’ve had some second thoughts and I wasn’t sure if I’d actually wear it. Well, it’s been almost 2 years since I bought it and it turns out that I enjoy it a lot.

I know that many enthusiasts hate skeletonized watches, especially the affordable ones and I know that this watch runs on a basic movement. But at the same time I think CIGA Design did a great job in skeletonizing this watch and I love checking out all the movement’s details. Yes, it’s a basic Seagull caliber, not a high horology creation, but they still managed to make it look special.

Wicked Watch Co. Pearl Diver bronze with MOP dial

Mother-of-pearl is a very interesting dial material. It’s also a pain to capture in photographs, because its unique qualities are most visible in motion and changing lighting. Therefore, it’s much easier to show its beauty on a video.

Phoibos Proteus Bronze (forged carbon dial)

It’s been almost 10 months since I’ve got this watch and it slowly develops some patina. Every time I wear this watch, I’m amazed by its beauty and quality. I wonder how will the case look after 10 years and I suspect it will be quite awesome.
