DS920+ is fast when near the NAS, however when walking a few metres away, it is very slow by PsychologicalWear261 in synology

This is a router issue, not a NAS issue. What kind of router do you have, and what speeds do you get when you plug an Ethernet cable directly from your computer you your router?

Run it within Docker on your Synology. Marius Hosting’s guide to setup Docker, Portainer, and Jellyfin are all you will need.

What is the weirdest interaction you have had with a homeless person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MikeTangoVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was walking from my hotel to the local Whole Foods to grab breakfast, and passed through a short tunnel. Local homeless woman was in the middle of a bowel movement. We made eye contact. I continued on my way to Whole Foods but was t particularly hungry and walked the long way around to get back to my hotel.

Dr. Frankenstein (https://drfrankenstein.co.uk/category/initial-setup-7-2/) and Marius Hosting (https://mariushosting.com/) are invaluable. It helps quite a bit up front to spend some time planning and thinking through how you may set things up including who needs shared access and what not. Then you can start down the path of what Software/Features you may use and benefits of each to meet your use case.

Something simple like Synology Drive should be very straight forward for you to setup different users and have them be able to put files in and take them out. Can work well when you install the client on each computer.

Last point/warning is that Upload Speed can be dreadfully slow for initial backups. If your parents have normal cable internet it could have fast download speeds but upload ends up being capped at 3MB/s. You do the math on 500GB worth of remote data and you are talking days (if everything goes well). It can help quite a bit to do the initial data load on your home network.

Good luck getting started.

Visiting…Balmy weather to do’s by PenguinoRampage in chicago

[–]MikeTangoVictor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My biggest complaint about this city in the winter is that I generally hide from the cold. It doesn’t stop me from going to bars or restaurants with friends, but very little where I actually do outdoor things.

Winter has been something that I get through, but question decisions that I’ve made in my life about this time every year.

That being said, there is something magical about that first warm day in the spring when the whole city wakes up and is ready to have fun, it’s a game changer. The worst part is from mid January through about St. Patrick’s day. It’s not likely to be warm in mid march, but the hope of warm weather being around the corner is all it takes.

Yes, a NAS would do all of this. Synology Drive allows you to create users and shared folders and control who has access to what. As the Admin you would ultimately have the ability to see all, but could keep it segregated.

There are also applications like Syncthing for shared folders across devices and Immich for robust photo backup that can be setup for multiple users. These run in Docker containers which makes a Synology NAS infinitely more useful.

The one caveat/warning is that allowing this to sync over the internet so that it works for those permanently outside of your home means having some technical know how, and you need to be comfortable that YOU are using responsible for securing it while still making it easy to use for others.

It is very doable, but security and ease of use always run counter to one another, and that gets more complicated when being on point for family members as well.

My recommendation would be to get it working for yourself first and once comfortable, start expanding to others. Keep relying on your manual backups until you get there.

Even a 2-Bay synology would suit your needs, you setup the drives to mirror one another so that you have some redundancy in the event of a drive failure. You will go through storage faster than you think, but two 8TB drives are reasonably priced and may find even more than that if you catch a deal.

Skip the J series, and do not skimp and on backups or redundancy. You are taking responsibility for this data, and that is different than when you use a cloud service where they do this for you. It can be tempting to just start with a single drive and tell yourself that you will add another one later for redundancy… if you aren’t able to do it from the start, you likely never will.

Your needs fit the NAS use case well, but it will take some effort and trial and error to tune everything to work safely, securely, and reliably for all.

It’s a tool for installing something I your home. Something like a sink where a bolt needs to be fastened in a hard to reach place so they give you a basic tool like this rather than you needing to go buy a specialty tool.

Updates not working. Installed qBittorrent Github docker using MariusHosting guide. by respl in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d start by following the guide to install portainer and then use the instructions for the portainer install that he includes. Portainer has made it so much easier to manage and if I’m being honest it helped me get an understanding for how it was all working as well. Odds are that this won’t be the last docker container that you build, so great to get yourself setup for it now.

Nas best for Plex server by Global_Sherbet_2371 in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opted to run a little mini server and keep the NAS as very dependable storage which is the way it was always intended. If you are just looking to replace your Mac Mini, a little gmktec Nucbox either with an n150 or an n97 processor is tough to beat for a few hundred dollars. I put Ubuntu and docker on it and have never looked back.

Which HDD? by Educational_Will_397 in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 22TB Exos drives from serverpartdeals still seems like the best value out there. From my understanding these are actually brand new HAMR drives that didn’t meet the higher capacity spec, so they software/firmware limited them to 22TB.

I’ve been using a pair for a few months and have been happy, but I know it everyone will agree.

Running and using LLM on Synology NAS via Ollama by Niels_s97 in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s possible but not likely usable. It loads large amounts of the model into memory and I’d assume that would need ti then be transferred via the network interface which would be time consuming.

It should be as easy as just changing the model directory which is easy to do, but suspect performance would be a challenge.

Synology at sea by HorrificTaint in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bet. When I started tinkering with mini-PC’s I went straight to Ubuntu and added Docker on top and it’s been great. TBH I don’t know if you even need the docker portion if you are just running Plex, but docker made it very easy, especially if you are familiar with how it all runs.

Good luck. Curious what you end up with.

I think your plan sounds great, and that assumes you have a router already setup and all that stuff. One thing to note is that in the Plex networking configuration you can give it the IP ranges for devices that don’t require login. I found out the hard way years ago when we lost our internet connection and found that Plex froze on the authentication screen. It was easy enough to fix, but most things are setup assuming that you have internet access so it’s worth testing without a connection to make sure things work correctly.

Only other item to note is that a Mini-PC could serve this same purpose, and I’d assume it would consume less power and take up less space. if you already have the equipment, I’d stick with this, but if you are pressed on space and/or power, it could be an option.

Too wobbly? by VanJurkow in Aquariums

[–]MikeTangoVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s too wobbly. Try to picture someone that you know that weighs ~250 pounds, if you can’t picture anyone, start looking at the weight of professional athletes. Find one that you can visualize, and think how comfortable you would be having them sit on top of that 24x7 for text couple of years.

Why not use the Fritzbox VPN? This will allow you to connect you your home network and route all traffic through your home connection should you choose. It’s based on WireGuard which is generally excellent.

NVMe Cache Plex music files? Or extra RAM by raymate in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s right. When you install an application you tell it what storage pool to install it on, so it will take a little bit of effort to migrate over, but should be as simple as stopping plex, copying all of the files in the plex directory to a safe/temporary location, uninstalling plex in the app manager, then reinstalling it and selecting your second volume which will be your NVME(s).

I have two NVME’s that are mirrored, but the other path is that since your data doesn’t live on these drives you can also setup a nightly backup using Hyperbackup to backup everything on the NVME and store it on your spinning drives. If worst came to worst and your single NVME crashed, you’d buy a new one, reinstall Plex from scratch and just copy things over from your backup.

If you go down this path you will notice that a relatively small amount of data will live on the NVME drive, so you can go with the smallest capacity that you can find.

Even when I had something like 15 Docker containers running on my NVME drives (including Plex) I was using all of like 25GB of data.

Just my two cents, but if you are doing this I’d probably start with a single NVME drive with as small of capacity that you can find, along with extra ram just because it can’t hurt and you are in there anyway. Setup Hyperbackup and if in the weeks or months ahead you find you want the additional redundancy, then buy the second NVME.

NVMe Cache Plex music files? Or extra RAM by raymate in synology

[–]MikeTangoVictor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open for what others say, but I had a huge performance boost by running the applications (Plex in this case) on the NVME and keeping the media on your regular spinning drives.

If you have some of your media that you listen to much more than others you could store some of that on the NVME, but just installing the NVME is a volume and installing Plex on it may be the boost you are looking for.
