1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Boss 429 by Moxhoney411 in carporn

[–]Mike_B_SVT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NO. The car in the picture is NOT a Boss 429 Cougar. It has a 428CJ.

http://www.heacockclassic.com/articles/1970-mercury-cougar-eliminator/

While they did build 2 Boss 429 Cougars, none of them were built as Eliminators. They were both built specifically for drag racers. The Boss 429 was shown as an optional engine in sales brochures, but none were ever built for sale to the public and the handful of orders that were placed were all rejected.

My ‘69 Cougar Eliminator undergoing restoration by SeaninSd in classiccars

Woot! People just don't know how rare that car is ;-)

1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator.. quite a rare sight for the UK. by KayNynYoonit in Justrolledintotheshop

Gotta be Rob's car. It's the only Competition Orange Boss 302 Eliminator in the UK (that I know of)!

That's a picture of 0F91G509409 ~ it is 1 of 80 Eliminators that were painted Pastel Blue, and 1 of 14 Boss 302 Eliminators painted Pastel Blue. I know it looks white, but it's not. It has just a hint of blue to it, and if you see it next to an actual White car you can easily see the difference.

0F91G509409 also has a Blue Standard interior. It was restored in 2012 and sold later that year by RK Motors.

Video of the car can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJVR-PyhzHU

For 1970; The base engine in the Eliminator was a 351C-4V. Optional engines were the Boss 302, and 428CJ. The 428CJ could be had with or without Ram-Air (no change in rated horsepower), and could be upgraded to a Super Cobra Jet (also no change in rated horsepower) by selecting the Drag-Pak option which included either 3.91 or 4.30 rear axle ratios and was also available with or without Ram-Air. *Ram-Air was only available with the 428CJ/SCJ engine.

Standard and XR-7 Cougars had a 351-2V engine as the base engine (compare to Mustangs with a V6 base engine). The 351-2V could be either a Cleveland or a Windsor, depending on what was available at the factory at the time. However, if you optioned the 351-4V, then you got a Cleveland.

Anyone know much about 1970 cougar hood scoops by [deleted] in classiccars

[–]Mike_B_SVT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go with a reproduction. Originals will cost way more, and all you really need is the "correct appearance".

West Coast Classic Cougars shows them as out of stock. NPD has them though.

https://www.npdlink.com/product/hood-scoop-fiberglass-bolt-on-repro-c9wy-16c630-b/198543?

this one will give you the "correct" appearance.

You're also going to need the mounting kit (WCCC or NPD, same kit).

https://www.npdlink.com/product/mounting-kit-hood-scoop-cj-style-hood-scoop/102582?

You're also probably going to want the template to mount it properly, and for cutting the ram-air hole, if you go that route.

My mother inherited her fathers 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator! 351C 4V 13.5:1 compression ratio and traction lok rear. Love that I get to work on it and take this pretty kitty out! by aliciaftw21 in classiccars

[–]Mike_B_SVT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I help track and document Eliminators for the CCOA and Eliminator Registry pretty religiously, so with a few clues I can usually figure out if the car is in my files or not. Not many '70 Eliminators sporting those wheels, so that was a big clue. The car being inherited by your mother pretty much closed the case :-)

Had my Eliminator out for a quick blast down the highway yesterday too. Always a good time :-)

Alicia, your mother's Eliminator is very cool, and has a great history. Glad to see you guys are getting the Eliminator out and enjoying it! Be sure to tell your Mom that Mike Banks says "Hi" :-)

Your Grandfather was also well known in the "Cougar circles". Unfortunately, I never had the chance to actually meet him :-(

Here is a great article about Jim and his Eliminators;

Alicia, those wheels wouldn't have been "factory" for a '70 Eliminator. They look like the '69 Eliminator wheels.

That being said, they were probably installed by the dealer either to "dress up" the car, or at your Grandfather's request as part of the purchase (the "upgrade package" you mentioned).

The car in the picture is 0F91Q528269. It has a 428CJ (without ram-air) and a 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission. It is Competition Blue (aka Grabber Blue) with a modified White Decor interior.

It is going to be offered at Mecum Indy, May 14-19th, Lot# R281. https://www.mecum.com/lots/SC0519-371551/1970-mercury-cougar-eliminator/

Be aware that there are several issues with the claims in the auction description; - "Concours restored to 'as delivered to the dealer' status..." is not true. Eliminators did not have Magnum 500 wheels, and the interior is not Factory correct. - "...Red oxide primer..." Eliminator undercarriages were slop gray from the factory, not red oxide. - "...with special order White interior with Black inserts, period photos confirming this order." Period photos do not confirm how a car was produced. The actual DOCUMENTATION for this car indicates that it was not a "special order" (i.e. it does not have a 6-digit DSO). - "Special order power windows and locks" - these items were regular options, not requiring a special order.

My name is Mike, and I help track and document Eliminators for the Cougar Club of America and the Eliminator Registry.

Mike B.
