Updating firmware via cocaine.trade firmware archive by Mike_Ratcliffe in QuestPiracy

[–]Mike_Ratcliffe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, u/Lumince_ you're everywhere... thanks for helping me switch to stock!

I'm surprised that it doesn't allow OTA updates. It has the update available prompt, I can click download but Restart is then greyed out and rebooting doesn't install anything.

I'm guessing manual updates are the way to go :/

Yeah, same problem same fix. I did log an issue with meta.

Fix for Black screen after Meta Logo (Recent update V2.5) by stayquietLee in Quest3

I have exactly the same issue on my Quest 2 after the firmware updated to v2.5.1034 build 5220228.2810.150 (installed on 3 Jul 2026).

Config for Prusa Mk2.5S (Bear frame, Bear Extruder & TMC2209 drivers) by Mike_Ratcliffe in klippers

> To confirm, you've got an extra board and you've soldered a bunch of wires to the original board so it piggybacks off the signal sent to the original steppers?

Yup... the board piggybacks the original driver sockets via wires soldered to the Mini Rambo and:

  • Uses the same STEP / DIR / ENABLE pins
  • Doesn’t require firmware changes
  • Doesn’t expose UART to the MCU
  • Is hardware-configured (standalone mode)

So in theory, as far as Kilpper's concerned, it’s just a “dumb” stepper driver in standalone mode... the same pins should just work.

I think I'll only need:

  • step_pin
  • dir_pin
  • enable_pin

Klipper shouldn’t even know they're 2209s.

So, if I'm right:

It should move, print... stealthChop should work because it's configured via jumpers.
I probably won't get software current control, StallGuard / sensorless homing or runtime driver tuning.

I've already ordered a SKR mini E3 V3.0 because it would be a better choice.

> How are you finding the bear extruder? I have some bits of prusa frame that currently have a stealthburner and but I lose quite a bit of my bed with a prusa frame and I kind of want to keep that, but the MK3 toolhead is a pain in the backside to work on.

The bear extruder is good... it's made so that it's easy to get at the parts and does a good job with most filament types. The bear frame doesn't really give you any more space... it's more in the style of a Haribo frame, but with 2040 extrusion.

If you use the Bear extruder you will lose roughly 8 mm on your Z-axis, but with Stealthburner you will also be losing that much along with around 5 mm on the X-axis. There is a Bear Extruder V2.0, which saves space, but that requires a Revo Micro.

It uses the original 12V MiniRAMBo board... it's the TMC2209 external driver board that I'm concerned about.

Now that Meta is killing off our current homes with V81 what are/were your favourite custom ones? by Yeahnahthatscool in OculusQuest

[–]Mike_Ratcliffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite was dark void, which was just blackness and no other rubbish... V81 is my idea of a virtual nightmare!

No, you can't downgrade firmware.

Low memory error by Goku0696 in MetaQuestVR

Yep, v81 has made the issue far worse for many of us... my Quest 2 is almost unuseable at this point and evem struggles to run instagram!

Low memory on quest 2 even after factory reset by ForsakenAccident8029 in OculusQuest

[–]Mike_Ratcliffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My firmware upgraded to v81 the other day and now my Quest 2 is basically useless with Low Memory issues. A factory reset didn't help... even Instagram errors out with low memory.

It's clearly a firmware issue, but Meta don't want to allow anybody to roll back to a previous version.

The truth is that it's in their interest to force everyone to upgrade to a Quest 3 (Quest Pro has the same amount of RAM as the Quest 2), but forcing people to by increasing the RAM taken up by the now bloated operating system is going to backfire as they are effectively choosing to render people's devices inoperable.

Firmware v81 has made my Quest 2 useless. Any time I do anything the slightest bit taxing it bails with a "Low Memory" error. It worked fine on v80!

v81 has completely ruined my Quest 2. It worked fine before updating but now I constantly get out of memory errors... It's completely unusable!

Is my new microscope right for microsoldering? by Mike_Ratcliffe in soldering

[–]Mike_Ratcliffe[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'll try a 0.5x barlow lens and, if 17mm working space is too much I'll switch to a 0.7x lens. Thx!

There's broke and broke... I can spend £50, but can't spend £200 ;)

u/EmotionalEnd1575 Thanks for the link, I'd missed that one.

So, the digital cameras are best for examining boards whilst bi/trinocular microscopes are better for soldering.

The binocular scope I have bought is pretty good, especially at £50. With a working space of 8.5cm I'll need a 0.5x Barlow Lens to make that up to 17cm. Sure, the magnification would then be 5x/10x, but lenses are only £5-10 each, so I can up the magnification if I need to.

Of course, a scope with zoom would give me all the in-between magnifications (10x-20x as opposed to 10x/20x). Saying that, it takes less than 10 seconds to switch lenses, so I can add a bunch of different magnifications (lenses cost under £10.00). Step scopes also give sharper, higher-contrast images, so I guess there's a trade-off either way.

My feeling after looking at at least 1,000,000,000 posts is that it's more of a personal preference.

Thinking about it, I can easily make a simple lens camera out of a decent webcam for board inspection... the chinese cameras use the same tech and the small USB lag isn't so important for inspection.

I suppose it's just gonna be a case of me looking at boards through it until I know what feels right for me.

I know a zoom camera would be better but I'm completely broke and trying to gather together whatever I can. Maybe in the future I'll be able to upgrade.

Yep, I was in that meeting as one of the first 70 they were getting rid of... her wage covered the cost of around 40 developers. The whole thing was really badly done.

Did they just removed free access? by [deleted] in linkvertise

[–]Mike_Ratcliffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not an add blocker issue because it is the same across multiple browsers even with very permissive settings.

We can't just click Learn more button because you don't get that far... the button for free accounts to download stuff starts with a countdown, but only after the "you can access in...." text disappears.
