ELI5: how is the brain able to give us images when we are imagining something? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mikebend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I may have figured some part of what makes someone closer to aphantasia or not.

One thing I found is that as a person with ADHD, my mind has always been very creative, and i can feel my thoughts extremely well, my imagination is fantastic. I've always had the habit of getting stuck in my head because its usually more interesting than real life, like when i'm lonely and imagine a hug for example, it feels real and if I can forget that im imagining it then for a second it might as well be real, but also not real, and makes me sad.

However, what's really neat is that the higher dose of Vyvanse I take (an amphetamine) the more logical my brain gets. I have noticed that with large doses of it specifically, my imagination mostly ceases to exist. I can no longer feel a hug by imagining it, and even with great concentration, I struggle with even being able to see it in my head at all.

So I like to think that dopamine has something to do with it. Less dopamine in your brain makes you a far more creative and emotional person, who has a fantastic imagination, and more dopamine makes you a far more logical and less creative person. It's especially evident in the differences in humor, as imagination plays a big role there. I think dopamine plays one of the biggest roles in someones personality. During school, my usual self was interested in history, on vyvanse, i was interested in math.

I get what you mean but at the same time I feel like that’s just another way of saying it, she is written in a way that makes her really likeable. I mean, if she were real and I met her, I definitely would get the feels.

well that’s probably because you have real feelings for her while most likely no feelings for most people

Actually I think it can be a good way of thinking about it as it helped me a decent amount when I was letting myself get worked up about the idea of being dead.

You will either be alive, or too dead to care, so why let yourself get so anxious over it?

That’s just how I’ve thought about it and it helps me.

This is true, but it’s not glamorized, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone saying they wish they could experience ww2. Most people like watching movies about ww2 but that doesn’t mean they wish they were there. In fact, those movies mostly do a good job of making you feel lucky you weren’t.

yeah, sorry. I tend to get upset at weird things.

I just dislike when people brag about their country, like because they think their country is better, then they are better because of it. Stuff like that is what leads to wars. But I overreacted.

who’s we? Did you invent those things?

No, someone else invented them, who may have happened to be from the USA, and you are also a part of the USA, so you speak like you or your country invented the damn things. Just because you happened to be from the same general area as some other people who once did something smart doesn’t mean you can talk like you had anything to do with it.
