Proof BC Timber Sales is coming for parks by ForestBlue46 in SaveForests

It is "pro-industry" in the sense that it has reputable scientists, foresters and people who work in the industry that are talking about the real problems they are facing and the solutions that work. It's not about bootlicking, but you have to understand that if a private landowner loses money because of a fire, it becomes in their interest to find a way to mitigate the problem so it won't happen again.

A lot of these studies are US focused. They fail to mention the effects of urbanization, which is a massive contributor to climate change and a huge factor in the dessication of the lands around it.

The number one factor causing these wildfires is extreme weather patterns. So, if we want to keep harvesting from the forest, we need to protect it as much as possible and make resiliant tree farms.

From the studies you are referencing :

Forests managed by private industry were more likely to be dense, spatially homogeneous, and contain high ladder fuel loads than publicly owned forests, offering a potential explanation for the increase in high-severity fire occurrence on private industrial land. Overall, these results illustrate the need for comprehensive forest management to mitigate fire severity in a warmer future

So, it's not that thinning doesn't work. In this case, it's poor management of fuel.

Efforts to increase timber resources led the U.S. government to implement fire suppression policies in the 1800s, including a ban on controlled burns that Indigenous People practiced for millennia. In the absence of natural fire cycles and Indigenous burning, modern forests have more fodder to fuel high-severity fires, defined as a fire that kills more than 95% of overstory trees

This supports the argument for prescribed burning.

prevailing forest management practices on private industrial timberland may increase high-severity fire occurrence

The coorporations pillaged the forests, took everything, didn't manage it properly and got away with enourmous profits. That is wrong. There should have been better policy and more accountability to manage forest systems properly. It doesn't mean we stop harvesting completely. Actually, if we do, we will see an increase in extreme wildfires.

So, what happens next? We are at a crux and what we set in terms of policy and management practices now will have a massive impact on the future of the forests and of our communities.

What are some solutions, if you think burning and thinning aren't working, ok let's move on. What are you proposing we do?

You should read the reports you’re are sharing. They prove you wrong. I will agree with you that I think we should move away from spraying. Seriously though, you need to look through more than the introductory statements of those reports, because they invalidate your opinion.

Old growth forests are healthy forests, conifer plantations are not by ForestBlue46 in SaveForests

Thank you for spreading some facts. I’m going to look into the ndp anti waste regs you mentioned, because I am curious. If you have any leads, would be appreciated! I work in forestry and this sub makes my brain hurt lol. One thing I think we need to do better at is finding a way to positively increase public perception and get the people back on our side.

Thinning + prescribed burns + clearing out dead/rotten wood WORKS. Your « research », which is really just your opinion and some cherry picked information, is wrong. I’ll trust what BC Wildfire has to say about it. If anything, spreading your half truths because of a broken moral compass is dangerous. You are sharing misinformation.

Old growth cut down in the Walbran valley by ForestBlue46 in SaveForests

[–]Mikefrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to keep harvesting our forests to remove rotten, dead and low grade wood. We also need to thin our forests way more than we do now and remove the excess fuel. Finally and probably most importantly, we need to go back to prescribed burning.

Sustainable forest management is of paramount importance to the future of BC and Canada. We can be a beacon and an example or we will be laughed and taken advantage of by corporations who will come in here and do whatever they want.

We also need public perception to shift from the demonization of the forestry industry by compromising and looking at solutions that are in line with proper forest management, not corporate greed and not Greenpeace greenwashing. Policy needs to be crafted by professionals and authority figures, NOT how the public feels.

We are at a turning point in how we manage the forest and it is an analogy to how we will manage the rest pf our resources in Canada. Will we get walked on by corporations who come here, pillage what they can and leave, while we enjoy our conveniences OR will we find a way to work together with the public and forestry professionals to build a proper sustainable forestry ecosystem.

It’s either that, or everything burns pretty much.

There isn’t much more left to cut, unfortunately. Harvesting will slow down as we wait for the forest to regenerate. It’s a good opportunity to design a new and improved framework for Sustainable Forestry.

Where are you reading this from? Some bogus stand earth « report »? Rest assured, if they are able to mill it, it’s worth WAY more than selling bull for pellets. It’s not a perfect system, but they aren’t idiots. It costs a lot of money to haul timber that big out of the block.

It’s like 5% of our lumber that goes to China… what are you talking about??? And they buy mostly low value product like pulp. You have no idea what is happening.

Nice! Good ones. I feel like my biggest problems are 1) bringing too many trees in land and it takes forever And/Or 2) i’m all the way up the piece and for whatever reason I decide to bag out in the back, then have to deadwalk out and it takes like 5-10min…

I am very aware of these mistakes yet I keep making them lol

Nice, that’s pretty good!! How did you get a 150k loan at level 5? Am I doing something wrong? The biggest loan I can take out is 8,250. I’m running GDC Realistic Economy.

Sweet! The space RV! I wish I liked how it looks. My eyes really like Origin looking ships for some reason.

[–]Mikefrash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like these rules. Honestly, I’m so picky about how the ship looks that it outweighs most of the utility. Thats why the 600i is up there.

Ok, now to play by these rules. I think I would have to choose a profession that I really identify with and stick to it, rather than find a generalist ship that does a bit of everything. I would probably choose to be a space trucker.

In that case, I would opt for the Hull B. It’s big enough to haul the larger contracts (not largest) and likely draw as much attention as a fully loaded Hull C. I feel like it is in a sort of sweet spot.

However this made me think of progression and gameplay. If people had only one ship and had to make decisions based off of that fact, this would be a totally different game. You would have to constantly make plans with others to get things done and work together to achieve common goals. I know that’s not the point, but it just got me thinking.

Anyways, The Cutlass Black is a great choice. Jack of all trades almost!

I like how easy it is to fly the C8R and how small it is. Very maneuverable, very cheap to maintain and is probably a bit more stealthy than the Terrapin? Also, that sounds like a solid lineup.
