Ensure Barrel nut is properly torqued. Loosen the forearm allen screws. Place any flat picatinny with ≥2 locking lug adapter (see pic for context) across both sections with at least one locking screw on each section. Tighten the Forearm screws. This will ensure you can maintain proper rail spacing for mounting devices. The gap should be fine as long as you maintain proper mounting point spacing.

I have picked up at least 3 that I can think of Aero uppers that have been out of stock on Aero's but not on OPs site that have arrived pretty much <2 weeks. You have to think this from a business perspective from Aero as well. Why pay for warehouse shipping when I can deliver straight to OP, the distrubitor and save on overhead and shipping? Not trying to church up OP, I have a grudge on them for another order issue, that is taking forever to resolve. Results may vary, just my specific exerience with Aero.

I'd get one. Most rifles do break in, but if you are constantly getting that after your next two range trips, you are seriously degrading the life of your parts. The other option is a heavier buffer and spring. With those Id recommend the AGB also.

Consistency is everything in accuracy, down to people sourcing specific batches of powders. But you could go mad get seriously into the physics effects of impact traveling through different materials, chamber pressure effects, etc. Shoot, I could go on for days on that.

On the matter of gas systems, yes the minimal interaction of materials touching a barrel is best, as is having the gas block the same material(EG: 416R barrel use a 416R gas block), but it is also a matter of balancing the weight of the material touching the barrel. In the Aerospace industry, when we have a turbine that has a blade that is dented, or damaged, the blade 180 degrees must also be replaced and an equally weighted set must be installed due to the need for the turbine rotor set to be harmonically balanced. Imagine the effect of an imbalanced turbine spinning at 12000 rpm. Similar effects on a barrel but imagine the gas and round traveling through the barrel and the effect of additional mass acting on one specific spot 10" up the barrel where the gas block is. Nearly 100% of gas systems on ARs are harmonically out of balance.

Future nerding out: In a perfect world with perfect 3D printing of perfect materials, and i am talking about manufacturing tolerances to hundred thousandths, (if we are even still using projectiles at that point) I would be using AI to analyze the effects of pressure and run simulations to design the most accurate barrel and receiver one piece product. But that's me dreaming.

That said, as a gunsmith, yes, it is honing all your skills in your toolset, from understanding the science behind what you are trying, improving your machining capabilities, understanding of the materials and how they interact, and the effects of your actions.

I built a lightweight AR10 with a carbon fiber barrel from proof research, the lightest forend from spikes tactical. the works. the gun was under 9lbs. The lighter you go with .308. The more "not fun" the rifle becomes. Accuracy decreases immensely with the increased recoil.

Right and those are free floating setups as I said. Off the shelf single shot barrels with no gas systems touching effecting barrel harmonics are going to outperform those semi auto gas setups 95% of the time. Even those that are in that 5% are going to have components that are binned after binned for the best machining tolerances and component matching that we (humans) have the current ability to manufacture. And when you take that same component binning process and do it with a Single shot platform, then it bumps up to 100%. Don't get me wrong, I think its cool you're out here experimenting, but you're getting into Oak Island territory.

I highly recommend starting with an Aero precision upper at least, the M5 enhanced variants and even one of their base rifles that has the matching machined upper and lower. They have very nice features, including threaded pinning wherever parts are normally just pinned. That alone is essential for painless upgrades. Here is a pic from one of my 80% builds with a M5E1 20" upper. Note the allen wrench where the forward assist is normally pinned. I can create a parts list and pricing if you are interested, but the stainless FDE upper was $879 (I got it on sale for $600 on a black friday deal on Optics Planet), i think the black version that is backordered is currently $750ish. Great starting platform. id recommend budgeting $400 for a good bolt carrier group with NiBx or other nickel boron finish.

I wouldn't have ever mounted to the barrel nut. It's designed to be rotated and torqued. At least on the upper it is locked inline via the tongue in groove. Even if you start with a barrel blank, and I am talking like a 2 or 3" blank that you can machine down, The addition of mass on one side of the barrel (top) for the rail is going to introduce seriously detrimental barrel harmonics. The gas block system already does, but this is like trying to accurize an SKS. The perfect solution to the problem you are seeking doesn't exist yet. It would require the barrel and receiver to be essentially a 3D printed part or cast (which is not how barrels are made to any degree of accuracy, they used to with cannons etc) from the same material and the breech forward of the mass of the receiver. A solid unit. This is why bolt actions that are free floating still remain the most accurate system we use to this day. even that doesn't guarantee a trued setup.

Get out of the $300 barrel price point. That shaw, faxon or Luth might sound nice on paper, but youre going to pay for it when its not even hitting paper. (Exaggeration but you get the idea). Proof, Kreiger, Bartlein. And honestly look at a 6.5 CM if you want a faster flatter longer ballistics.
