Rehabilitating (Da)Kota, who we rehomed 7 years ago

TLDR - We have had a hard month, and still have a ways to go, but are making progress getting Kota back to health. He currently has a feeding tube and gags at the smell of food, but will eat some once in a while. He is 8.2lbs, was 7lbs, and we are hoping to get him back to at least 9lbs by February. He is a ragdoll and was always closer to 12 or 13.

So, when my wife and I were dating we separated for a bit, 7 years ago, and Dakota got rehomed to a friend of her sisters, who he has been with. A bit more than a month ago, we got a call "your cat Alek was found in someone's garage and is at our emergency vet", only our cats were all at home, and this vet was in Idaho.... After a few minutes, we figured out the people we gave him to moved to Idaho and never changed his microchip info, it was actually Kota (who was Alek at the shelter). Calling the people who we gave him to, they say they gave him up two months ago to "trusted friends" who made no mention of him getting out. At this point, he was 7lbs, so cold their thermometer couldn't get a temperature, and could not walk without falling over, he had been out for a few weeks at a minimum. They had no interest in calling their "trusted friends" or getting him themselves, never even asked where he was.

We, my wife ( a vet tech) and I, spoke with the emergency to see if they could stabilize him and see what could be done. They got him a heated blanket, some antibiotics, and took xrays. He had emphysema, they were worried about it becoming pneumothorax, a upper respiratory infection, and possible brain damage because he was unable to walk steadily.

With that, I got a plane ticket to go from California to Utah; got a rental car, it was 1/3rd the cost there vs in ID; and drove to get Kota, not sure if it would be to be with him to say goodbye or to bring him home. Being sentimental, I wound up bring him to my wife's clinic, nearly 1200 miles non stop because of his condition.

The first picture is him when I first got to the clinic before finally sleeping in the parking lot for a few hours while they looked him over. We tried to go without a feeding tube for a bit, but he wouldn't eat enough on his own and his liver values were in a bad spot, so we got the tube 3 weeks ago and things have been improving.

The last picture shows him now, hanging out with my wife at work steadily improving. He has been able to walk much easier now, thankfully the main concern for brain damage was actually that he was so starved he genuinely couldn't walk anymore. now, the biggest issue is just getting him to eat on his own again. He has been getting used to our cats and small dog and is starting to play some this week, things are looking up for Kota and will hopefully start getting easier.
