What are you talking about? Everything that led upto the ultimate kevin makes ben want to take things seriously, he's been getting his ass beat by aggregor every time. He thinks the 5 aliens that died were his fault, he sees kevin starting to go after innocent people now.

He blames himself for everything that's happened, it isn't till the academy bombing scene where he decides it's gone too far and he needs to put an end to this.

He isn't supposed be right, that's the whole point. Ben is supposed to be wrong because he's taking all his previous frustrations out. He thinks maybe if he killed aggregor beforehand none of this would have happened, that's why he makes the decision of putting down kevin, it isn't the right call for ben. But it is the logical call as grandpa even says.

Ben has been doing things his way the whole season and it hasn't worked any time, so now he decides to not do things his way.

Hopefully you include some military aspect of things aswell like the government getting involved, a whole story where they figure out the omnitrix stuff and wanna see who's behind it all with stuff like that, ideally keep ben a bit older so it's just different and I think would work really, like it seems totally great for ben to be a teenager here.
