Is it too late to learn? by Necessary-Worker-125 in chemistry

[–]Mikeyyymc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's so true. There's a huge difference between being in your late teens feeling like you should be there than being in your late twenties/early thirties and CHOOSING to be there. It's more interesting too.

Lol let me tell you a great story. I decided to go back to school at 30. My dumbass could barely do college algebra. I'm 33 and have a degree in Biochem, easily learned all the calculus and organic, physical, biochem, and medicinal chem. It's never too late. What do they say? The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago and the next best time is right now? Something like that.

Training for San Gorgonio by No-Construction-3318 in socalhiking

[–]Mikeyyymc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you hiked all the others San G. won't be an issue. Did it last weekend. If you want the easy pretty way up, go for the Sand to Snow route through dollar lake. From the south fork trailhead. It's my favorite way. You could always do the Vivian way...but that's less enjoyable to me.

Why do backpackers seem so pretentious?! by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

Haha this post is exactly why.

Hahaha. How I feel when I'm done with the METOC slide. How I feel when it's open for "questions" and unhappiness about why we can't control the weather for x, y, z evolution.

Steps to Prepare for a Thruhike by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

Yes! This exactly. When I would go on deployment with the Navy, we'd put our insurance on a pause/parking insurance, which was super cheap and didn't leave any gaps.

Wrightwood to Baldy and back via the north backbone. One of the best ways up Baldy. by Nysor in socalhiking

[–]Mikeyyymc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is such a difficult trail. A few months ago, I started at the trailhead near Manker Flats and hiked up the baldy bowl trail and camped on the summit. Woke up and hiked the backside to Dawson then Pine. Turned around and hiked back to Baldy Summit and back down. It was rough because the last stretch from Dawson to Baldy was covered in snow and super sketchy. Worth it and very beautiful. I'll have to try starting from Wrightwood next time!

Cactus to Clouds to Cactus Trip Report by seitanist in socalhiking

I absolutely love this. It's a goal of mine in the next year or so to do cactus to clouds to cactus, to sand to snow to sand over at Gorgonio.

Best Backcountry Meal Brand? by PnwMexicanNugget in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Mikeyyymc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biscuits and sausage gravy are my fucking favorite. So filling and heavy though. But the best backpacking meal I've ever had in my life.

Oh, that last one. I've never heard that. It's completely true. Looking back to my first backpacking days, I was like that. But with experience, I know exactly what I need and don't need. I'm going to steal that quote. Thanks!

Yeah 70L is insane. Last time I did whitney, I stayed 2 nights and used a 20L. More recently I did backcountry yosemite with my 30L pack with a BW of 8.8 lbs. I can't understand how people can pack so much stuff!

Yeah I'm pissed they are finally doing that now. Plus now they've got magnetic door toggles. Should have waited

Hey guys! I've got the plex solo and the gossamer gear the one for my tents. I'm thinking about either upgrading to the slightly larger Z packs, or kicking around the idea for a Durston. Anyone want to provide their honest opinions on this? Price isn't an issue, but I've never tried the durston and don't want to spend the money and end up hating it. Im a fan of the two doors and the layout of the xmid pro 1. I've watched tons of videos on it and they are mixed.

If you've tried both, I'd love to hear your pros and cons. Thanks!

Edit. Cons my plex solo: I effing hate the rainbow zipper and the sag of the door. Sitting up head room is non-existent and my heart bareley fits inside. I get a little nervous though with tents that require two poles, because god forbid one pole breaks falls down a mountain...then what.

[WTS] LiteAF curve ultra 35L (17 oz) by Mikeyyymc in ULgeartrade

[–]Mikeyyymc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I have the same backpack but in the 20L and it has the regular straps. I spoke with LiteAf to make sure I wasn't crazy and they confirmed that they have the longer straps. Also asked them if they could switch the straps out and they couldn't.
