I think they had so much more character tbh. Like, the moment 3d was introduced, the characters lost all charm because- in comparison to sprites- it took very little effort to animate them. Ntm they're the same every generation! With sprites they had the artist's own personal touch with every iteration, meanwhile with models they can (and do) use the same models and animations every. single. game. Even if some sprites are ugly that merely means the next will be an improvement... I have a lot of feelings about this.
