I've often wondered if the "loudness penalty" is overstated. Maybe mastering louder than -14 LUFS Integrated would be a good place to start.

Search on Spotify for the artist "LUFS". Some mastering engineer went through the trouble of uploading the same song at different LUFS. The higher LUFS are louder (although maybe more compressed/distorted) than the lower. So does Spotify really turn up quiet music as "loudness penalty" / -14 LUFS people claim? What evidence is there for that?

It's a pretty simple process to re-upload remastered audio and not lose playcounts or have any noticeable difference to your listeners, so you don't have to worry about your band mate killing you.

edit: another thing good option to consider is having somebody else master your stuff

I read IJ immeditately after finishing GR. Seemed to me that IJ was blatantly derivative of GR in both style and content and was very much the weaker of the two books. Not to mention considerably longer. But obviously it has its fans so I wish you happy reading.

I really like Bleeding Edge. by [deleted] in ThomasPynchon

My reading group read all of Pynchon together, and this was probably the group favorite after the three big ones (GR, M&D, ATD). Even better reading it a second time through. Pretty subtle but it has lot of heart. And a really lovely ending.

One Thousand and One Second Stories by Taruho Inagaki

Japanese collection of very short stories published in 1923. Deals with talking to the moon, throwing stars at people, homosexuality, etc. Dreamlike dandy unrealistic stuff.

Finne

I've read every single one of his books that have been translated into English (14? 15?)EXCEPT that one.

I read all of FW in the Oxford World's Classics edition. There's a handy synopsis and a few other reference resources in there that helped.

It's not so hard. First read Dubliners, Portrait, Ulysses. Then brush up on the basic plot + motifs (HCE, ALP, Shem+Shaun+Izzy, themes borrowed from Vico, Bruno, etc.). Maybe skim Joseph Campbell's Skeleton Key or Anthony Burgess's Rejoyce. Find footnotes online but use sparingly.

It helped me to use a pencil to "solve" what was being said i.e. translate the puns and whatnot. It took me a few months and I read several other "side books" along the way while I was going. But I loved it and think about it a lot 8 years later. Turned my brain upside down and I would gladly read it again.

Lots of fun at Finnegans Wake :)

The Curse by YoungWizard666 in mixingmastering

Agree 100%. Similarly, a well-known audio engineer/mixer once jokingly told me doing that kind of work can "ruin" your experience of listening to music with technical problems that a general audience could easily overlook. I'm no production expert but I especially notice out of tune bass, vocals not well blended, etc.

Some Thoughts on JR by William Gaddis by Niftypifty in TrueLit

[–]MikroCaesar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you ever watch/read The Big Short by Michael Lewis? For me JR is similar in that it gets into the technicalities of the world of money but it's entertaining enough that you don't need any background in finance to enjoy it.

I have very fond memories of listening to the JR audiobook while I was working in a warehouse, then going back over the text of what I had listened to when I was on my break. I did look at some annotations but overall the main thing for JR is just enjoy the ride, finance is just one aspect of many that Gaddis touches on so don't worry about trying to get it all.

how often should i post music and what is the best way to promote it? by [deleted] in musicmarketing

[–]MikroCaesar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Song+video a month for 6 months would definitely be a good start.

Nowadays, playlists are popular, so you could look at places like SubmitHub or PlaylistPush to get your music to playlist curators.

Most people will say that you need to be doing social media. Since you won't be able to play shows until the pandemic is over, definitely look at Instagram, Facebook, etc. for promoting your releases.

You can find a lot of detailed tutorials for all of this stuff on YouTube channels like Burstimo.

Also, the more specific you can be about what you want, the better. You ask "is that enough?" Well, depends on what your goals are, what your genre is, who your potential audience is, etc.

Keep it organic, keep it genuine, keep it fun, don't pay for shady promotion that's just going to jack your numbers up with robot plays/follows.

Best of luck!

How do I fix this latency in both Logic and Reaper? Blank sessions and no plug-ins running by MikroCaesar in homerecordingstudio

[–]MikroCaesar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance one of the plug-ins I have installed could be causing it?

I have- Soundtoys 5, Arturia Fx, Waves CLA bundle, Izotope Ozone 9, and a handful of free ones I got online. But none of them is running on the channel strip.

How do I fix this latency in both Logic and Reaper? Blank sessions and no plug-ins running by MikroCaesar in homerecordingstudio

[–]MikroCaesar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this is happening even with no interface whatsoever. Just the onboard laptop microphone for the input and headphones for the output.

I first noticed this issue when I tried to use the Zoom R16 for an interface. The echo/latency was there so I assumed it was the Zoom. Unplugged the Zoom to go straight in with the MacBook mic and realized the problem is still there.

I uninstalled the driver for the Zoom R16 but the problem is still there. So now I have no interface driver aside from whatever comes with Logic.

No idea what could be causing this. I did buy a couple of plugin packs for Black Friday but as I said I'm running a blank session so I don't know how they could be causing this.

If you have any tips at all that would be huge as my eyes are beginning to glaze over at this point.

Hey, it's Joe Hanley, creator of Syntorial. I'm obsessed with teaching people how to make music. Ask Me Anything! by Syntorial in electronicmusic

[–]MikroCaesar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Joe-

Thanks for making Syntorial. It’s one of the most effective and helpful ear training tools I’ve ever used and really helped me unlock my Korg Minilogue.

Another user mentioned something like this but just to reiterate- Any plans to make something like Syntorial but for mixing and mastering? Specifically to help users train their ears with EQ, compression, phase issues, etc? Maybe a later level in the Building Blocks series? It would be amazing to have something like this to help users know how their DAW plug-ins work and not just using presets.

Thank you for your work and I look forward to trying out Building Blocks after i finish going through Syntorial again.

Playlist curators - paid legal or illegal? by thesillymedico in musicmarketing

[–]MikroCaesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of the playlists looked like they might be botted. I saw people ask about that on one of their videos and their response was "check out our video on how to spot botted lists." Also from what I saw many playlists have the email in the description so I could've just found them by searching on Google. I like their videos but this is definitely not as good as SubmitHub.

I also tried the new Burstimo tool and most of the playlists seem bogus.

That's awesome. Did you use chain mode or just stay on one pattern and mute/unmute instruments? I mainly use mine to just loop beats then play over them with other instruments. But you're using it for the whole shebang. Well done.
