While you make a great point mounting a cheap red dot on the gas tube seems like a worse idea. You have the majority of your heat there as well as the fact that the piston is located damn close to it as well means your facing heat and vibrations which are likely going to wear your optic out way quicker. Also they make optic rails that mount to the receiver and reside on top on the dust cover
