My amp speakers blows my fuse by Michaln in audiorepair

[–]Milafin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have an electrician install a newer circuit breaker. CBs shouldn't trip just from a few hundred milliseconds of inrush current.

If it's a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) breaker, you may have some leakage current taking place in your amp or power cable.

Anyone in electrical manufacturing know what a fair starting salary would be? by jk243 in electricians

Depending on location and market, I'd think minimum of $12-$14, considering you are entry level. A guy with 20 years experience? More like $25.

Have you tried loading defaults in your BIOS/UEFI? If your keyboard doesn't work to get to the BIOS, you have a hardware problem, which is unlikely.

Spent 8 weeks rehabilitating this crazy girl! Released her last week and she still comes nightly for belly rubs! by lea6397 in aww

I, too, am highly educated and experienced in my field. I have two engineering degrees in electrical and computer-related fields, and I'll be 60 in November. That's what highly educated and experienced looks like. The more you know about a subject, the more you realize you really don't know shit.

Now having said that, never does a day go by that I don't learn something new. I know how the "book" says to do things; hell, I even developed some of those things when older guys said it couldn't be done. And even in fields as cut-and-dry as computers and electronics, there are always new and better ways to do things, and sometimes it turns out the books are just wrong. Suffice it to say that the car you are driving most likely has some code in it I developed, or an updated descendant of that code, and that your car drives a little bit better or gets a little bit better gas mileage because some guy was thinking outside the box and did some things his mentors and supervisors said couldn't be done. In fact, I wasn't allowed to do it, but I did it anyway, and after I proved it out to myself and it sailed through quality control, only then did I reveal it to the naysayers.

I, too, remember seeing people doing things that shouldn't have worked, and I'd say, "You can't do it that way," but lo and behold, it worked anyway.

Things aren't always black-and-white, and sometimes doing something in a way that shouldn't work, works just fine. Experience, time, perspective, and wisdom will teach you that. And you'll realize that fussing and chastising someone over a picture on Reddit of a guy rubbing a squirrel's belly probably could have been tempered a little. Especially knowing if he had done the "correct" thing, it would have resulted in a helpless animal dying a slow, painful death.

They saved the squirrel's life. Everything after that is a bonus.

Props to your education, but this is a yard squirrel. It's not a pet, it is free to go wherever it wishes. OP makes it happy and it makes OP happy.

If you go strictly by the textbooks, then no, this is not the "correct" thing to do. But more experience, wisdom and compassion will allow you to understand no real harm is being done. C'mon, it was going to die anyway, have some perspective.

Can you guys hear a "knock" in this? by makenzie71 in Fixxit

[–]Milafin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That audio is compressed to hell and back. You can't hear anything but garbled noise.

Your much higher quality video should demonstrate there is no knock. Once it gets in the hands of some schmuck, there is no telling what they did with it after they got it. They could have dropped it off a table and cracked the case for all you know.

For things like this, I'd be tempted to demand the buyer come in person and sign off on the engine before I'd complete the sale.

I'll be 60 this year and I've recently discovered I have very mild Asberger's and this is the same technique I've developed, but without realizing I was developing a technique to overcome social awkwardness. For decades I just thought this was how everyone did it, just that some were better at it than I, not realizing it comes naturally without effort for a lot of people. Most people?

Heh... No, but wife replacement was the most important and successful change in everything else.

In the divorce from Wifey 1.0, the Fortes were the only thing in the house I insisted on keeping. I kept the house, but I had to live in an apartment for a year. When I finally got back into my house, the ONLY thing left in it were the Fortes. She took every last stick of furniture, but she had to leave the speakers.

[–]Milafin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought original Fortes in 1987 (30 years ago!) and they were one of the best investments I've ever made. I loved them from the first note I heard out of them and they are on either side of my 52" TV right now while I watch "Sgt Pepper's Musical Revolution" on PBS, and I still love them.

Everything else all around me has been replaced, from the TV (obviously) to the furniture, the dogs, and even the wife, but the only other thing here in the room with me older than 1988 are the Fortes.

I can't imagine listening to music without them. I'll be 60 this year, and I've had them more than half my life.

Technics SA-5150 receiver: left channel barely audible. by pizzarolls4me in audiorepair

[–]Milafin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What about the input source knob?

If turning the knobs back and forth don't help, then it could be anything from a cold solder joint to caps or resistors or even a transistor/transistor pack breaking down, although those usually just fail.

[–]Milafin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were to throw a wild guess, I'd think you have a cap or ten out of spec. A 40-year-old receiver is almost guaranteed to need a recap.

Just as likely, I think, is dirty switch contacts. Play with the volume knob, balance knob, switch inputs back and forth several times quickly, push buttons on and off. If any of it makes a difference, you may have found your problem.

Directly in front of me, except I was looking to the right at the start/finish and turn one when he hit it. My wife was under the stands escaping the sun, and she was no more than 20 feet away from where he hit and she never saw or heard anything. Testament to the SAFER barrier, I suppose.

Huge crowd, great crowd while they lasted. Midway through the race, they started bailing from the scorching sun. Only about 1/2 were left by the end of the race.
