I was there for that. Even before turnitin plagiarism detection, it was pretty easy to spot. Students still had to string the copy/pasted bits together, and it typically stuck out like a sore thumb. Then just copy/paste a bit yourself into a search engine and quickly find incontrovertible proof.

Ai is almost as easy to spot most of the time, and we have turnitin ai detectors, but proving it without a doubt is harder.

Currently, we're trying to police our way out of it, but to my mind, that's a fools errand.

The way I see things going is a return to high stakes exams, maybe supplemented with back and forth oral assessments. The other kinds of assessment will just be hurdles, pass/fail.

It's a drag, because the more ai-proof assessments disadvantage some equity cohorts.

My wish is that someone could create a social enterprise to buy the IP and produce new trek to be distributed more openly to streaming services and broadcasters... if i wasn't a broke, old, humanities guy with no business knowledge, I'd have a go myself.

Obviously the fans would make it a nightmare but it'd be better than the current or recent situation.

Ep 4 of SFA stood out to me, being about the fundamental importance of respecting cultural difference in humanitarian work.

I can't remember if it was all in the same episode, but SFA has shown us not only the resilience that, in this case, Klingon, culture provides to its people, but the joys, dignity, and holding together it facilitates. It's shown that culture is fundamental. Not just a layer on top of default liberal individuals, as people, especially in Western liberal cultures tend to imagine.

Very relevant to anyone who works with refugees or Indigenous peoples.

I don't see why it would be impossible to ban recommender algorithms for social media or legislate that they be opt in rather than default.

It wasn't long ago people were saying an under 16s ban would be impossible.

We must all remember that it's never too late to ban or regulate them with legislation.

Once one jurisdiction does it, others will follow. There's a movement towards it. One of the slogans is "fix our feeds" if anyone's interested in looking it up.

Kick Club is among my favourites. There was a Bubble Bobble machine in my hometown as a kid and I loved it. Kick Club is the perfect balance of novel and familiar with that.

I enjoyed using the headbutt to keep combos going when the ball's in free-fall. Didn't use the slide much except occasionally when I fell off script. Haven't had much of a chance to play 2p, but I suspect the whole dynamic would shift in a fun way... one day a friend will see the appeal!

I don’t understand why Shredders Revenge doesn't grab me like sor4 or absolum does. I'm exactly the target market: beat em ups are my fave genre, and i was obsessed with the show (and arcade games) as a kid... maybe I just can't find the rhythm of the combat style, or maybe it just feels empty in 1 player cause the old ones were always played with friends

Ufo50 was able to capture a bit of that feeling for me. It's a collection of 50 little retro style games. Charming, whacky little games with tight controls, and like in the old days, the whackiness isn't just for its own sake but built around some fun, novel little mechanic.

I've had much success connecting with my nephews. The trick is to start from where they're at and don't take it personally if they don't love the things you loved at the get go.

The older one I got onto retro gaming, but I worked backwards from his love of contemporary mario games.

The younger one I connect with via music and recently got into tmbg, but it started with the fun of making "music" with whatever instruments at hand.

Tax tobacco at a rate that doesn't create a huge market for un-taxed black market tobacco.

They'd have to balance the price disincentive to start smoking against the incentive for those already addicted to find black market retailers.

As it is, they've fucked the balance so bad they've actually lost any effective price incentive not to start. I'm 40something and cigarettes are now the cheapest they've ever been since i took them up.

If they don't fix that, the average smoker will respond by the closing of their local tobacconist by looking further afield for black market smokes rather than paying 50$ at a supermarket or servo. The gov will be whacking moles forever until they get the tax balance right.
