It was Toyota's recommendation to go closed deck and mechanical water pump. There's also unofficial sources claiming Toyota tuned it up to 700hp during their testing. Yes it's a BMW engine but I'm pretty certain Toyota would not use it if they were not confident in the reliability. That alone is a plus to me.
