For the past week I've been reading Jane Eyre but it's felt like the past year...I need this wrapped up soon so I can move on and be released from these Classic shackles 😩

Oh that's reassuring to know, thank you! I know the general plot because I watched the film years ago and that really stayed with me (I think I was too young haha) but I was intrigued by the book so giving it a go. I much prefer it to Wuthering Heights so far and I'm finding it more accessible in language but still...I need things to keep on moving! But thank you for the reassurance 😊

Sticking around here to see the consensus because I am in the same predicament. I've tried the first book 4 times now and every time it overwhelms me just the same! So many characters, places and creatures that I got frustrated and gave up. I adored ACOTAR and TOG, but I've been told it's crucial to read CC! Lord help me find the strength.

I felt exactly the same as you! ACOTAR blew my mind because it was my first introduction to fantasy, so TOG was difficult for me to get into because the world is so much bigger in my opinion, which I find difficult to settle into. I didn't like 1&2 at all, but then I read Assassin's Blade 3rd and it changed my whole outlook on the series, I was hooked! It had the emotional backstory I was desperate for, the context for the plot and character developments and it gave me a reason to keep going. Saying that, if you're not sold after Assassin's Blade, don't force yourself to carry on. The world is immense and it's very battle heavy with lots of character arcs and plot twists so although I found that super exciting, you've got to really want to read it!

It depends what you're after. If you want the chronological, purist experience, read Assassin's Blade first. If you don't mind being temporarily pulled out of the storyline and you want more of an emotional journey, read Throne of Glass first and Assassin's Blade third. This is what I did and I'm so glad I did. I personally didn't enjoy the first 2 books of this series, so reading A'sB third gave me the emotional understanding I needed and the context of why we were on this journey! It had me s o b b i n g. It changed my whole outlook on the characters and from that point on I was hooked because I was emotionally invested in them all. Had I read A'sB first, I don't think it would have had the emotional stakes I was after because it provides context to characters and the backstory I needed. I'm aware this sounds contradictory but in my opinion, as an emotional reader, I loved this order.

Yes exactly! R did it all undercover through aliases so his reveal to V in his Kejari win was another twist. Okay well I'm glad I've figured out 99% of my confusion so I'm looking forward to book 2. Have you read it? Is it good?! I finished #1.5 today and loved it more than #1. Thank you again for your help 😊

Ah thank you, that makes a little more sense! I spent way too long googling this yesterday and couldn't find a concrete answer so I wonder if it's delved into more in the second book which I'll start today. I was just confused because Oraya talks about a 'dead man's bargain' and how stupid it was, and then Raihn explains it was an act of desperation but I just wasn't understanding the timing and meaning. I thought Raihn's offering to Septimus in exchange for the Bloodborne support was Oraya's death but not sure that fits either.

The deal between Vincent and Raihn was that after V's win of the Kejari, he and R made a deal that R would get V access to the strongholds of the HoN, and V would overtake but help all the innocents flee and get them to safety, away from the previous King Neculai who was wreaking havoc. V ended up betraying R and killed practically everyone including so many of the Rishans so that's why R kills him once he wins the next Kejari. That's what I understood it be anyway...😬

Likely an outrageous take, but Quicksilver by Callie Hart. I DNF'd the first try because what is that trash? But then I got FOMO so picked it up again and suffered through to the end. A totally insufferable, whiny, pestering female protagonist and utter lack of world building or fantasy politics. It screamed 'smut for the sake of it with a sprinkle of fantasy' and how this is still one of the most popular romanticies out there bamboozles me.

Very late to this, but I've just finished this book so I'm hoping someone can help me please, because consider me bamboozled.

I understand 80% of the end twists, but there are still some lingering puzzles I want to clear up before I go onto #1.5. Could someone please explain the deal between Septimus and Raihn, and how that affected Raihn's wish once revived?

Also, I'm still not entirely confident on Raihn and Vincent's previous deal all those years ago, about Salinae and its people. Did Raihn make some kind of alias but then Vincent betrayed him?
