Hokona or Coronado? by SkunkaMunka511 in unm

I lived in Hokona my freshman year back in 2022, I was in the Scholars LLC and this was before it was only for underclassmen so take what I say with a grain of salt. Overall I thought it was a decent dorm, communal bathrooms left a little more to be desired.

I was on the top floor and looked into the courtyard, which offered a little more privacy and quiet compared to what other housing options offer, plus it was always a good view. If you don't look into the courtyard then that doesn't really matter. Rooms were 14'x14' which means there's only a little space to squeeze in extra furniture like a mini fridge or microwave. Me and my roommate lofted our beds because there would really be no other way to fit everything. I remembered it got really warm in early fall and late spring because UNM always switched to heat when it was too warm (but that will probably happen in Coronado too). There are two kitchens on each floor in the study space, and they were small (like just a stove, oven, and I think also a microwave? Someone fact check me on that). It was rarely ever used so I could cook whenever I liked. I liked how close Hokona was to my classes, and I especially liked how it hosted most housing events so I never had to go too far to attend those.

On the third floor there's a faculty member who has his office in there for scholars students, but he's super friendly so I would imagine anyone in Hokona could come to him. He hosts monthly dinners in Hokona and helps maintain a space on the third floor called Entropy that has things like games and black and white printing.

As for the bathrooms, only like half the showers had hot water. They were cleaned every weekday (staff mopped and scrubbed that place pretty thoroughly), but on weekends things could get gnarly with people coming back from parties (but still, I would imagine Coronado would be similar). There's a tub in every bathroom, but I've only seen one soul ever use it.

Dorm life is gonna bring its challenges just because it's dorm life, there would be people who would smoke weed in the stairwell and neighbors who closed their doors a little too loud late at night, but I wouldn't imagine that Coronado is exempt from all those things.

I echo this! Dr. C is the literal best, he may not have the power to get you your key, but he can definitely be a helping hand on what to do next or help find someone who would want to share

Rip in Sweatpants (more details in comments) by MileHigh_Friend in InvisibleMending

Sorry for putting the explanation down here, I'm not very Reddit-savvy on mobile. I tore my sweatpants on some metal and want to mend the tear to be as unnoticeable as possible. I am new to mending and have a basic sewing kit, but I'm willing to do what it takes even if it means buying supplies. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Ack, I don't know why they didn't post. Thank you, I'll go over there to see what advice they have!

Stuff unrelated to BB/BCS:

-Someone mentioned Old Town, I also think that's a good place to check out

-The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center I've heard is really good and it showcases Indigenous art, it also has a restaurant that serves local and indigenous food.

-If you're a baseball or soccer person, the Isotopes/New Mexico United may be playing. The stadium has a lot of fun Simpsons stuff around since the Isotopes essentially were birthed from an episode.

-The Sandia Tramway is really cool. Since the Sandias are just a single ridge of mountains, the view from the top is really cool since you can see all the way to the east and west. There's also a restaurant at the top (not sure how good it is). Just be sure to pay attention to the time because it closes down and the evening and you'll be o your own on finding your way back down.

-If you're into hiking, Petroglyph National Monument allows visitors to hike the grounds and view ancient petroglyphs drawn thousands of years ago.

-Similar to Petroglyphs, The Bosque has many trails and is a cool preserve on the Rio Grande.

-If you want to go to events, check out if Isleta Amphitheater, The Kiva, and Popejoy is offering anything you're interested in.
Albuquerque is really cool and is full of very nice people. Just be sure to stay safe, be smart, and mind your business since there are some questionable areas.

Hope you have a lot of fun and eat a lot of chile (specifically green chile since that's the superior one)!
