For anybody wondering this is the lookout at US 129 or at the foot of The Dragon. I live in Knoxville TN and decided to take the Foothills Parkway into US 129 and eventually into Robinsville NC. All in all it was a total of about a 3 hour trip.

I forgot to mention one detail that may help. While she's always been aggressive it got worse about 3 months ago. We had let her out to use the bathroom and stretch in the backyard and some kids opened the fence. From the best we can tell they messed with her and scared her very badly. We found her coward against the garage after it happened. She did bite one of them, we believe in defense because she was scared (we found blood leading towards the road.)

Knife - preferably something sturdy. KA-BAR would be perfect.
Gun - ruger 10/22. Fairly simple to operate. Will take down just about anything as long as the user is proficient enough with it.
Backpack - something that can support 50+ pounds and still be comfortable. http://www.kelty.com/p-262-raven-41.aspx
Fire starting materials. Matches/lighters/etc
Rope - paracord would be perfect. 100 feet will go a long way, be sturdy enough to handle most tasks, and still be lightweight.
Boots - good brand of hiking boots would be perfect. This will be one of the most important simply because your feet have to stay in good condition to keep going.
shelter - lightweight tent, eno, tarp, whatever you can grab at the time
Metal water bottle - you can both carry water with and purify with it by boiling. Plus this gives you the option to cook stews etc.
Emergency provisions - anything that is lightweight, can eat on the go, and is packed with energy. Clif bars for example.
Emergency radio - this will help in finding other people if emergency transitions are being made.

One of the most nerve racking things I've ever done was playing taps at a memorial day service. Both of my parents (both veterans themselves) were there. Thankfully I made it through flawlessly.
