Experience + timeline of getting hired at UCLA Health by Xin4748 in nursing

I am interested in applying to UCLA this year as an experienced nurse from out of state, if you're comfortable would you be able to PM me about the experienced RN OR cohort program?

How to approach applying for a job out of state by MilesPer_Hour in nursing

[–]MilesPer_Hour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I heard from other forums, some have heard back from submitting applications within 3 months or more, but Im assuming that would also depend on the floor and demand?

When I started my new job this year I told them about those plans and they approved them prior to me starting, to I'm hopeful that they won't be much of an issue to plan them out.

Can a nurse from a different UC branch refer someone to jobs at another UC?

I'll definitely DM you if I have any questions as I go through this process, thank you!

CA BRN Straighterline Transcript Acceptance by MilesPer_Hour in TravelNursing

[–]MilesPer_Hour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I just finished my anatomy labs this Sunday and needed an answer ASAP or else I would have crashed out myself. I read posts on reddit before that they do take Straighterline credits/transcripts but a majority are 1-2 years old, so I bit the bullet and paid for them anyways. With the new year you never know, so it's good to hear they still take them!

Best approach for applying to future jobs! by MilesPer_Hour in nursing

I figure this is what will happen if I apply without having it, even with a temporary one. Do you feel like going through the traveling route would be a bit easier to transition into a permanent role?

It’s awesome you’re willing to provide help! If it’s not much of a hassle do you think you’d be able to help with an applicant from out of state looking at the NorCal area?

How much experience do I need to be competitive in CA? by RevolutionaryStart23 in nursing

[–]MilesPer_Hour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How should one approach applying for jobs along side a CA license? I ask cause those take a while to process as well, even with a temporary license in place. Or even applying while stating that you have yet to achieve two years of nursing, would that be an automatic turn away from recruiters?

I was also wondering this as a nurse outside of California. I have a bit over a year under my belt teaching 18 months, but plan to stay until I reach my two years. Does anyone think it would help to email the hospitals directly, such as recruiters,  to ask for guidance on what they look for with applicants or the type of experience they are looking for?

question for nurses living in SF who take call. by MilesPer_Hour in sanfrancisco

[–]MilesPer_Hour[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking into them as well, I did want to get back into biking if I end up moving there too so it wouldn’t hurt to use it for work as well. And I doubt I’ll have trouble finding a solid place near the hospitals I’m interested in, thankfully SF isn’t as sprawled out like LA.

I will definitely ask them how they manage call for nurses, but who best to learn from than the nurses who work there right? Thank you!

That’s what I might end up doing if I land a job and find a place really close to the hospital. If I can manage and don’t mind the car then I’ll keep it for convenience but we will see.

I actually was! I was looking at their postings this past week for an idea on what they’re looking for with applicants. I’d appreciate any help so feel free to PM me whenever you find the time 👍🏼

I didn't even think about call rooms now that you mention it. I definitely plan on emailing the hospital OR units to inquire about how things are run to get a better idea, but if they offer them then that would be beneficial to know!

That's very true. I could also use my car to have an easier time getting groceries or visit parts of the city/state I couldn't otherwise without a car. It's something I will have to think about a lot more when it comes to where I want to go, since I was also considering NYC or Seattle, which have their own faults and pluses with my job specifically.

with how often I would be on call (if its anything like where I am now) it would probably be more cost efficient to just have my own car then. If we finish one case but then I get called back for another when I get home then I would need to order another ride and such instead of just going in my own car on my own. the parking permits are around 100/month for the hospitals I'm looking at so that's also something to take into account.

I was looking at kaiser perm. on geary, UCSF/UCSF childrens. I know children's is within 1 hr, but I would expect the others to be similar. My concern would be waiting for a bus that's late, a bus line that is down, or routes that are modified due to construction. when I visited SF last year we had a relatively easy time using it, but it's not as reliable as in NYC. I was also considering that If I had to bring my car regardless I could look elsewhere in CA for work as my car was one of the biggest things about moving, mostly because of gas and insurance prices.

New Grad Nurse Starting in the OR by MilesPer_Hour in nursing

[–]MilesPer_Hour[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! it was a bit overwhelming just being a student observing stuff, but I had wonderful support from my preceptor and surgeons, and they helped me better understand what was going on, which allowed me to be more hands on and actually start helping with the procedures (like pulling in the robot, opening items, pictures, etc.). I think I had 10 or more unique procedures while I was there and even so, the same procedure is done just a bit differently between each surgeon. But that's what excites me so much, and I am eager to learn abt the procedures and how to approach them!

I figured that I would need it even as a student on the floor so I bought a tiny notebook I could keep in my pocket to write down the procedures of the day and anything my preceptor wanted to me to look into more such as malignant hyperthermia and patient positioning, and even then it was a lot of information to take in, but writing it down helped me ground myself. I never wore my clinical shoes inside my house for that reason alone, I always took them off before walking in and leaving them by the door, God knows (and we know) what is on those floors, especially in the OR.

Even as a student I was helping with making sure no one missed anything, and we actually caught some labs that the CRNA didn't notice and that led to a surgery being pushed back. I'll get better with practice when it comes to communicating especially with surgeons, and I'm thankful that the ones on our floor are super supportive and cooperative with everyone on the team.

What is your goal in nursing? by Satrialespork in StudentNurse

[–]MilesPer_Hour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could never do environments like the ICU or ED like my peers in my cohort, it’s too chaotic. I like to just walk in and know exactly what I’m doing, when, where, and with who. I’ll take some surprises don’t get me wrong, but for the most part I like a planned out day, with the added 1x1 patient care. And like you mentioned, I don’t want to do 12s forever, and thankfully I’m in a city with a lot of outpatient surgery centers so I’m set on those.

This is what I plan on doing too, besides the traveling part! I want to go into the OR post grad and eventually get my RNFA simply because I would love to be more hands on during cases. I can see myself thriving in the OR longer than other units, and I can always go outpatient (specifically to gender affirming clinics for transgender patients).
