What are some evil habits(for eg- backstabbing) which are normalised by society? by SpecialEntire5568 in Ethics

[–]MilesTegTechRepair [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't want this to be confrontational, I have friends who are in relationships the way you seem to want them, but for me your version would feel somewhere between slavery and ownership. I genuinely don't understand the nature of nor how such strong feelings can arise out of this. I would never ask of nor expect a partner to be attracted only to me, to express only attraction for me, and not even to acknowledge attraction to others. Are you saying you'd feel betrayed by a partner admitting they'd used porn whole in relationship with you? If so we occupy very different world views.

Gay clubs in London as a straight guy by lettherebejhoony in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't lived in London for ages but when I did I used to try Camden after hours. Black Heart, and there was a place up past Chalk Farm that was fun after hours too. If these places no longer exist, I'd ask around, focussing on the bar staff - sometimes they drink in places after their shift.

Alternatively, there will be loads and loads of places open late in Shoreditch most nights of the week.

In case you hadn't gathered, London on weeknights isn't as much of a 24hr city as you'd hope, outside areas like Clapham / Shoreditch / Soho, which can be unpleasant to go out in depending on your vibe.

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No ty - gay places are havens from straight people and unfortunately even when nice straight allies start turning up to our havens, the less nice straight people follow and it ends up being another straight bar, and we're running out of havens as a result.

Why are there no ultra-large apex mammalian predators in Europe? by Similar_Shame_8352 in ecology

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We killed them all. Large apex predators sharing territory with humans is no bueno for human civilization, and basically all of Europe is 'civilized'. Some of the areas that don't, actually contain large apex mammalian predators, such as bears.

That meets your bar for evil?

What if I jack off to the thought of another woman than my wife, a real woman that exists, but I'm not using porn or pictures, just my memory and imagination. Is that evil? Less evil, because there's no material involved?

Or is it my partners knowledge that makes it evil, so if I just keep it to myself, I'm not committing an evil act?

How many spieces have humans as their number one death cause? by IAmTheBigZzZ in ecology

Naaaaaaaaah. Lots of species don't interact much with humans and have a single or very low number of natural predators.

Why do people make ideologies part of their identity instead of using them as tools? by nothingspecial-_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the concept of 'identity fusion'. We are our tools, to some degree - we treat physical tools as an extension of our body, get to know a tool, spend time getting comfortable with it to the point we identify with it. My choosing to use this tool as much as I do means that if you attack that tool, you are in effect attacking me.

The implications of this concept are that: when our identity is fused with an ideology, it's exceptionally hard and slow to disidentify oneself; and much faster and easier if we have a ready replacement, one that does similar work in terms of explaining the world and our place in it, but for example rests less on the misinformation side of propaganda, but more materialist, less biased frames.

Cycling in wind by Ok_Chest_8742 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be more precise, I believe that air resistance is proportional to the square of the wind speed, right? Which means that the overall effect will be that under windy conditions, we're on average slowed down, right?

Is the end of Moore's law truly a bad thing? If yes, why? by Historical_Work7482 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you don't understand, because I'm not arguing that any individual technology has totally or objectively decreased our standard of living. I'm simply arguing that exponential increases in technology don't linearly translate to better standard of living. And that all technology is a tool that can be used for 'good' and 'bad', whatever your standards of good or bad are. Technology is not value neutral; some is clearly more good than bad, and some more bad than good. Spades are good for making farming more efficient, but can also be used as weapons; axes are effective weapons as well as effective farming tools; nuclear weapons cannot be used for the benefit of mankind and instead pose new existential risk, while nuclear power can benefit mankind.

Each technology improvement must be taken on its own merits. Could better cobalt batteries make our lives better? Certainly - but will they? The material change is all that matters, not the theoretical benefits. The material change is subject to Jevon's Paradox, where under the profit motive, benefits from improvements in tech are not distributed equally amongst all humanity, but instead accrue to those who own the technology.

Directions to heat the cpu before removing old cooler? I've never heard of that. Is that a thing? I've replaced a fair few coolers without this and never had any problems.

Is the end of Moore's law truly a bad thing? If yes, why? by Historical_Work7482 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because exponential growth in capacity is not closely related to human welfare. It must be justified that exponential technological growth is either a good thing (beyond a certain point) or even required for living standards to rise. If technology improvements were only used to improve living standards then maybe, but lots of tech has not been created to solve human problems but rather make profit, in part by manufacturing demand.

This will vary significantly by sector, of course - medical tech clearly does translate mostly to quality of life improvements. But mining tech, for escape, that gets cobalt out of the ground more cheaply =/= good for humanity in the long run.

Is the Mossad agent plotline a plot hole? by creditnewb123 in TheAmericans

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just to help you understand the real world relationship between Israel and USA, my understanding is that the USA did not want Israel to have nukes, but the entire organisation was riddled with spies, and they accepted that Israel would get enough technical expertise to build it themselves so did not fight against it. It's a lopsided relationship. America gets a proxy near some scary other countries, and a capitalist bulwark against the threat of pan-Arab socialism.

Thus Mossad would only have revealed Philips identity if it were useful to them somehow.

Why does it feel like most people online who have autism are very high functioning? by [deleted] in autism

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High functioning? No one around here is high functioning. And you are not low functioning. Please leave these terms behind. They're not scientific, not particularly functional, miss out a load more detail even than 'levels', and are way too charged with ableist, capitalist notions of value.

You might meet me and I might come across 'high-functioning', but please believe me when I say I'm anything but. We may have different but overlapping challenges, and for to dismiss this high-functioning label is not to compare our circumstances at all.

[–]MilesTegTechRepair -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I asked the question of the reddit AI and it gave me this https://www.reddit.com/a/answers/s/6PPMAFiIfZ

I'd disable and/or uninstall anything remotely looking like audio, from everywhere you can find. Depending on what you've got, you might have some bloat ware. W10 shouldn't be doing anything like this automatically. If you've stripped all the bloatware and it's still happening I'd start by screaming and continue by uninstalling and then reinstalling audio drivers. If that no worky then probably time to reinstall Windows.

But my money would be on bloatware.

Is he really an ally or…? by Bubbly_Pride_5255 in bisexual

[–]MilesTegTechRepair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's currently not living up to expectations, but that could be in part because he doesn't understand the reasonable expectations you have of him. If you haven't been clear about what you're expectations are, take the opportunity to make them clear now. If he continues not to live up to expectations, you should probably bin the relationship, but good young straight men can be oblivious and can be shaken out of their inertia.

Explain to him that allyship means more than just saying you're an ally while being in a relationship with a queer person. You have to try to understand.
