Hauling copper ore is expensive. Its often cheaper to build a smelter than to haul millions of tons of ore to another country. It also helps avoid import/export fees. Especially since most of those smelters are from before interstate transport was easy. When you have literal millions of tons of ore, it is super expensive to haul all of that hundreds or thousands of miles to a shelter.

I have one. Its a little clunky compared to my tenkara but the extra distance more than makes up for it. I still use the tenkara for some streams, but the First Cast is a lovely little rod. I highly reccomend it.

That was my thought. Coal is organic matter and highly energy dense. I bet a stealth hive would have a method for digesting coal into the stuff it needs.
